In determining the meanings of a planet in a sign, or house for that matter, you consider first the meaning associated with the planet and blend it into the meaning of the appropriate Sign or House. Mars primarily has to do with the person’s characteristic mode of expressing his or her energy as influenced by his or her desire.

The following takes that meaning and applies it to each Sign in the zodiac.

Mars in Aries – Mars in Aries indicates uncontainable energy that must find an outlet. The drive to get things accomplished produces creativity and originality, driven by desire. Unfortunately, that power occasionally runs off track, like a missile that goes astray. There is also the tendency to not be able to sustain their drive fro any length of time. These natives often are head strong and unwilling to take guidance from others. They are often competitive in everything that they do, regardless of the value derived from their actions. If the Aries Mars can learn to think out the consequences of their actions, and maintain a steady control, they can achieve a great deal. Dane Rudhyar has suggested that the rashness and aggressiveness of the Aries is a cover for an innate and unconscious sense of inferiority.

Mars in Taurus – In Taurus the expression of energy becomes more narrowed to anything having to do with material resources. Mars is slowed down in this earth element, giving them more time to consider and plan their actions. The result being that the inhibited energy is transformed into determination and perseverance. These natives are often skilled craftsmen or artisans. Their creations embody their energy and drive and are usually beautiful and long-lasting. They are not given to fighting at a drop of the hat, but if pushed into a fight, make very determined and deadly enemies, much like the Mel Gibson’s character in the “Patriot”.

Mars in Gemini – In Gemini the Mars energy is expressed in mental activity. These natives have very keen and critical minds. They often express their aggressiveness in debate and intellectual pursuits. Ingenuity and resourcefulness are hall marks of Mars in Gemini. Their energy however is easy vented, and does not lend itself to perseverance. News reporters and critics are often found with their Mars in Gemini.

Mars in Cancer – In Cancer, their energy takes on an intensely emotional context. They are moody at best, and often rise easily to anger when they are frustrated. Because of this, they are a real handful as a child, often resulting in estrangement from family members or psychological problems when they become older. If they are in an environment which allows no anger to be displayed, they often suppress these feelings creating big problems in their life. Mars in Cancer require a relief value of some kind that can be use safely to vent off their pent up emotions. Sports or other manual activities serve them well for this purpose. Many natives with Cancer Mars make excellent do-it-yourself repairman.

Mars in Leo – Mars’s energy in Leo is expressed in their willpower, creativity, and in the arts, particularly in dramatic parts. The uncontrollable energy of the Aries’ Mars is brought under control in Leo, providing stability and long term determination. They have the natural ability to inspire other’s confidence, and don’t lack in self-confidence either. They have strong beliefs and don’t deviate from them regardless of those who disagree with them. Their Mars energy is often expressed in their relationships, and their partners find them passionate and ardent lovers. In fact, an active sex life is very important to their well-being, and they are powerfully attracted to the opposite sex, who feel their energy and are attracted back to them.

Mars in Virgo – In Virgo, Mars energy is directed toward work and service to others. This combination is often found in skilled occupations where precession is important. They generally plan their actions carefully and execute them systematically. They are unlikely to take any action that doesn’t have a practical reason. They are often perfectionist, and so engaged in the individual details of their project, that they tend to miss the overall picture. Unlike some Mars signs, the Virgo Mars wants to be known as an expert in every little detail of their profession.

Mars in Libra – The Libra Mars turns its energy to social activities. They are usually the instigators of social events, asking only to be noticed and appreciated in return. They actively seek relationships, particularly intimate ones, where they will receive emotional gratification. They prefer their partners to be aggressive and energetic. They often live out their fantasies through the actions of their partners. Libra softens Mar’s aggressiveness and self-serving tendencies resulting in grace and charm. They can be very upset by any injustice done to others or themselves. They innately understand that what can happen to others, can also one day happen to them.

Mars in Scorpio – Scorpio intensifies Mars natural emotions and desires, resulting in courage and thoroughness in executing their intensions. The Scorpio Mar’s energy must be handled carefully, because without conscious moral control, it can lead to actions of degradation. With careful handling and sufficient moral awareness, the energy can lead to the highest spiritual awareness and achievement. These natives have great courage and resourcefulness in meeting obstacles head on and winning through. They can be fearless against all odds, including death when fighting for their beliefs. They also have a highly developed sexual drive. They have only friends or enemies, with them its like George W, you on one side or the other.

Mars in Sagittarius – Mars in Sagittarius forces the Mar’s energy into philosophical, religious, or other humanistic endeavors. These natives are usually seen at the forefront of causes that they embrace. They can create antagonism in other by their dogmatic approach. They are generally very strong patriots, and often would be considered right wing. To them God and country are their mantras. They believe strongly in improving their idea of the social order. They tend to enjoy sports, hunting, and other activities that get them outdoors. They are primarily traditionalist, seldom straying outside of the box.

Mars in Capricorn – In Capricorn Mar’s energy is directed towards their professional ambition. They tend to be materialistic in nature, and have a strong desire for recognition and reward. Their actions are usually well thought out and calculated to achieve concrete results in terms of their profession or finances. Their drive for these things provides the ability to have those things they desire most; financial success, and the material things that it brings. In Capricorn Mars energy is used in the most efficient manner of all of the signs. While Aries Mars abundant energy and Scorpio Mars intensity may be more than the Capricorn Mars; its efficiency makes it more effective in being used to attain one’s goals. Often successful military officers have this location. They are hard serious workers, and have no respect for those who are lazy and not willing to sweat to succeed.

Mars in Aquarius – Mar’s energy in Aquarius is directed toward maintaining one’s freedom of action. They prefer to chart their own course in life, and not be hampered by other’s opinions or attempted restraints. They have a high level of intelligence, and know that they do. Therefore, they refuse to allow other less intelligent individuals to rule them. Their weakness is that they may not appreciate the importance of working with others as a team, preferring instead to move alone. They are often inventors of new ways to do things, and are contemptuous of traditional views and methods. They often feel that the reason everyone id doing something ineffectively is because they haven’t had time to develop a better way. They only respect traditional methods if they can be shown to be the most effective. Generally speaking, they don’t function well under authority and require a wide range of freedom in their endeavors. Even if they are wrong, they won’t accept it until they have given something a try and failed.

Mars in Pisces – The source of Pisces Mar’s energy and strong emotions stem from the native’s unconscious mind. Unfortunately, particularly as a child, they often act these energies out, without knowing where they come from. Any suppressed anger from childhood trauma will often result in unexplained or unwarranted actions later on in life. In a way, these natives are captives of their own unconscious desires. After a while they learn to be subtle in their behavior towards others, in order to protect themselves from the results of their actions. They will hide their intensions, rather than confront others directly. Because they are always on an emotional treadmill, they are prone to tears over nothing at all. They require long periods of quiet and solitude to recharge their energy.

hey mars in Virgo there !!!
sitting in eight/ninth house along with Moon ,which i'm told is supposed to be a good thing as my mind(moon) and self expression(mars) are together in harmony, only sad thing though is that they are in Virgo which means i'm very critical to say the least but i use critisicm in a good way by finding errors in people and pointing out to them in a polite way.......
also because of mars in Virgo i'm calm on the surface which misleads people into thinking that i'm a pushover....
but i'm okay with it......virgo makes me concentrate on my job rather than talks..

Mars in Sagittarius here, conjoined with Mercury and Neptune.
I do think of myself as a patriot but it's definetly in an 'outside the box' sort of way. Perhaps I am an example of the opposite extreme. I am pretty far left of center on alot of issues.. but it's because I am intensely interested in improving society and am driven by deeply held spiritual beliefs that make me feel things need radical change.
Safe to say I am passionate about humanitarian and philosophic issues though.
Great descriptions, Lanny. Thanks.

Mars at 29 Leo here!

Cockadoodledoo!

One thing that I've heard from a few sources is that Mars in Leo in the 10th (my natal position) is supposed to strongly incline the native towards vigorous (ie. sporting) activity.

I'm the anti-sport (hee...this Fish isn't always comfortable w/ winning and losing - I love ties), but I *do* LOVE thrill-y rides (at amusement parks or bungee jumping, etc.), driving at insane speeds (feels wonderful), and nearly dying from some stunt while biking -
could those be considered a proxy for the normal sports behavior?

mars in virgo ( moon as well) in 8th house

makes me a person who relies a lot on minute planning, thankfully i have a capri asc which gives me a vision in carrying out my things in a detailed way & also with a good overview.

it makes me very hardworking, but my four planets in libra(saturn, pluto, mercury, jupiter) square with my capri ascendent and make me lazy at times

which really saddens my virgo moon, who just can't stand this lethargy.

so it's a kinda jumble inside my mind but...
fortunately my scorpio(organiser) sun organises everything an makes me a normal person..........

Ok..I have Mars in Cappy..20 Cap 32

I am NOT ambitious in the work place. I am very materialistic though. I dont have much drive, I procrastinate too much.

My Mars must be afflicted. Every other planet I agree and identify with. My Mars throws me out of kilter.

I am very conscientious (spelling?) in my work..but not ambitious at all.
I do have a very fiery temperament, but I can think logically. Aqu Sun.

I posted that my Mars just is not me at all. The other signs/planet combos I generally agree with.

Heres something potentially relevant, apparently my Mars is unaspected. Could that explain why the Mars/Capricorn description just doesnt sound like me?

Here's some info from Karen Hamaker-Zondag's book Aspects and Personality

General Features

Unaspected planets are just as important as aspected planets. By unaspected planets I mean planets that are not linked by major aspect with any other planet. Even if a planet has many minor aspects, I still treat it as unaspected for our present purposes, because a planet with no major aspect manifests itself in a very specific and unmistakable way, and the interpretation must allow for this.

So what exactly is implied when a planet is unaspected?
If a planet forms some aspect, you know that the psychic factors represented connect up with certain others. Numerous factors can be joined in this manner and they indicate a continual interplay in the horoscope. An unaspected planet does not share in any of this group activity but stands rather aloof; it is neither inhibited or stimulated by other planets, but acts in isolation. Because of the lack of contact with other factors, the native may have difficulty putting it in perspective. Recognising what the planet expresses is not particularly easy; the native may sense its potential but wonders how and when this could be exploited. By virtue of its detachment from the rest of the psyche, the energy of the planet exercises a mysterious fascination over the native, who feels impelled to find out more about it. He or she feels it’s effects all right, but is somewhat at a loss to account for the causes.

Accordingly there will be an inclination to emphasise the contents of any unaspected planet. The emphasis (which is generally totally unconscious) improves the planets “visibility” for the native; but it can create problems, because others already see the planets traits clearly enough and are likely to find the overcompensation annoying.

In order to learn what the unaspected planets signify, we can proceed as follows; consider the usual meaning of each planet, add a sense of isolation, and understand that the harmonious and inharmonious activities will express in a more extreme form. The following is how an unaspected Mars may work.......

Unaspected Mars in your Chart
The agressive form of the self-preservation instinct, executive power or energy will tend to express in extremes, usually on the side of overcompensation. This can show itself in restlessness, the inability to sit still, trying to prove oneself, pouring a great deal of energy into endless activities, etc. Also there is likely to be a passion for sport.
The fierceness and determination of someone with an unaspected Mars can be very great. To see if there will be any unpleasant consequences, the rest of the chart must be examined. An unaspected Mars will not in itself produce dangerous situations. Nevertheless, a spirit of courage and daring can suddenly grip the individual unaware, and can incite the native to take very big risks.
As a planet symbolising passion and violence, Mars in its unaspected state can produce sudden tantrums and outbursts, or short but powerful internal explosions. An unaspected Mars is like a tightly wound spring which can fly open at any moment, but generally does not. What gives it its violence is the difficulty in adjusting the Martian energy to given situations.
Where sexuality is concerned, the native often has a tremendous urge to make conquests owing to the exaggerated need to prove him or herself. Sometimes several affairs are kept going simultaneously (altough this is not a hard fast rule). The possibilities for sexual expression when Mars is not aspected are quite considerable. However, the native trying to prove him or herself, may beg off at a vital moment, or else may be inflamed by someone who is sexually incompatible, and so on.
People with an unaspected Mars sometimes give unintentional offense by being caustic, tactless and blunt. Sometimes they shock their nearest and dearest. A woman with an unaspected Mars may not know what to expect of her man or the best way to handle him; sometimes she enjoys being very masterful.
Mars begins much and finishes little. Its energy is not steadily applied. Those who have unaspected Mars should restrain their enthusiasm and remember that while it is easy enough to start things it costs time and trouble to bring them to completion.

Hi all! I greatly appreciate your acceptance of me into your forum and I have been reading the material - it is most fascinating! I love to be able to harness this knowledge and discuss it with like-minded individuals. I sincerely apologize for not being able to be as active as I would like to be because my computer is malfunctioning and I am accessing a public computer. I am also busy with school and work as I'm sure many of you can relate.

Anywho, that being said my Mars placement is in Capricorn 5th house and it trines my sun, asc, and merc. Hmm I find it interesting looking at all of your placements and relating them to your distinct personalities!

Sorry for rambling *blushes*
