I'm reading a lot about relationship synastry on this forum. I don't quite understand how you figure out synastry from people's charts.

I found this article: http://www.cafeastrology.com/articles/synastry.html and it's a little overwhelming with terminology and information.

I have a really basic question, what exactly am I looking for in charts to establish synastry? Am I comparing the placement of Planets in a given chart? But then how is this different then simply reading a chart?

If someone can share some links or insight, I'd really appreciate it.

Synastry can be complicated & I wouldn't recommend it until you get a strong footing in understanding a natal, because it is easy to take things out of context.

It also depends on what you're evaluating for, the type of relationship. Different relationships have different considerations that are of importance. You're not going to be looking for sexual attraction if evaluating for business partners or family members for example. If someone wants a fling you won't be looking for stability factors, but those for chemistry will take importance.

Having said that,
- look for 2 natals describing 2 people who have basic similarities in their approach to life, this is just to factor out 2 people who may look alien to each other
- then look at each natal and evaluate what they might like in a relationship, and look to the other and see if they could potentially offer that, keeping in mind the nature of relationship that they are interested in
- after the above, look at aspects from one chart to another that are conducive to good communication, attraction, stability, etc. knowing now what each partner might want, so what you're looking for here is on a sliding scale
- conjuncts to angles/nodes, anything really, since a conjunct is the strongest aspect, create a draw no matter the type of relationship
- evaluate progressions, esp of personal planets, to another's natal, regarding the timing, when they may potentially get a relationship off the ground OR if they already know each other, the windows of opportunity to reach a greater understanding of the other
- you can also look at the composite and do a synastry of it with each person's natal to see how the relationship affects their understanding of themselves and what they get out of it in a more selfish way. this is different from the aspects between the 2 natals, because that energy is in flux depending on how each person is responding to each aspect at any given moment in time. the aspects from the composite to the natal are more static.

It's different from reading a natal in that you are looking at the energies of 2 people interacting, each complete with their own sets of experiences, habits, likes, dislikes, etc.

Hope this was a basic enough explanation, but let me know if I missed areas that you are curious about.

OK, you are asking a question which prolly demands a more complex understanding of astrology fro you to understand but I will try to give a basic answer.

Each natal is a blueprint of that person. Each planet/asteroid shows a slice of that person:how that person operates, thinks, reasons, loves, hates, is turned off, is turned on etc

So, if you compare the basic blueprint of one person with that of the other, you have synastry.

To be very simple, the moons must touch for a soul relationship imho

Thank you both! I may be trying to take in too much at one time, but I wanted to get a basic understanding of it considering that term gets used a lot on this forum.
