What does "malefic overtones" mean in Astrology?

Well Saturn used to be called the malefic and Jupiter the beneficent.
So, malefic would prolly refer to things that are hard and struggles such as Saturn puts us through, I think.

So what makes a planet 'malefic' then? Cuz I've heard the term too and idk what its referring to, as I don't think of saturn as malefic. Saturn is a teacher. Saturn to me feels more like the parent that makes u eat ur broccoli bc he knows its good for u even if u don't like eating it lol I got to experience saturn at its return and can't say I liked it but it was for the better. Does malefic hafta do with aspects or strictly a planet?

Malefic was an old term, as Randall said. Saturn was one of the malefics, in the old usage of the terms. I am not sure what other planets, if any, were.

Th ancients considered it malefic along with Mars. Then later as Uranus and Pluto were discovered, they were lumped in that category as well (with the other Planets considered benefic).
