For example, I have venus in gemini in my third house, trine my moon. But if my moon is in aquarius hidden away in my twelfth house does this affect my venus in a bad way?

Just some thoughts here,
Trines facilitate energy flow, depending on the energy of the actual planets involved that could be beneficial, or to the contrary. Moon and Venus are both passive energies in a chart, so a trine from Aqua Moon 12th to Gem Venus 3rd says to me, isolating this feature, that Venus would be more open to expressing pent up emotions via Moon placement by sign/house (12th Aqua) in the course of writing or through talking with friends. A 12th house luminary is also a marker for creativity, so if you look elsewhere you might also find indicators that would help in creative expression. Venus in 3rd may have a lovely speaking voice or be a good writer/singer. Since Moon trine Venus typically draws in female energy, and appreciates the feminine, women may be drawn to the way you write/speak/express your emotions, you may find that how you talk to them helps them get things out in the open that they might not normally with others (trine in Air). You might also find that women or those more sensitively inclined respond favorably to your writing/speaking/singing style because it says things that they cannot. You might like to write on women's issues, or attend events in your community that speak to issues that women face/struggle with (Aquarius is a politically inclined, independent sign). Some examples of the way this energy is likely to manifest. For a fuller picture the houses that Venus and Moon rule should also be taken into account.

Thank you..this gave me a lot to think about. I really feel like I could open up my venus more if I allowed myself to be more creative.
