You must calculate the distance by degrees between 2 planets in a chart. So add in your head or use a calculator. Then once you find the distance compare that to the tightest aspect. For example if you had 2 planets that were 127 degrees apart. This would be a loose trine. A tight trine would be from 119-121 or maybe a little bit looser.

Just putting the Planets in order by Degree is a good start.

That gives you a fix on the ones that touch.

An easier way, for beginners, might be to think of intervals of 30.
All the major aspects are based on 30 degree intervals, so look for a planet at the same degree in each sign around the horoscope. because each sign contains 30 degrees.

For instance if you have a planet at 15 degrees in one sign, to find an exact aspect look at each of the other signs for any planet that sits at the same number degree, in this case 15 degrees.
If it is the same sign it is a conjunction
if it is one sign away it is a semi sextile
if it is two signs away it is a sextile
if it is three signs away it is a square
if it is four signs away it is a trine
if it is five signs away it is a quinqunx
if it is six signs away it is an opposition

in addition, notice if the planet you are comparing would be one degree higher or lower numerically, and this will be a 1 degree orb. in the example above your 15 degree planet will aspect another planet at 14 degrees to 16 degrees to be within a 1 degree orb.

Increase to within a 2 degree orb and you will look for an aspecting planet, from 2 degrees lower to 2 degrees higher, which in the example above of a planet at 15 degrees, would be to look for another planet in each sign from 13 degrees to 17 degrees.

does this make sense to you? look for the same degree in each of the signs and then count backward and forward for the amount of the orb. use the key above for the aspect designation.
