The term afflicted carries with it a lot of negativity and stems from classical astrology; a more humanistic approach prefers using the term "challenging."
After all not having challenging planets in a chart can be problematic as well; a nice balance between the two specially if they are working in synergy, in a away that one complements or enhances the other, is probably ideal but in the end is really what the person makes of things.
In addition there are so many other factors like the progressed chart, the midpoints, the transits, and asteroids that the natal is just one contribution to it all.
I would agree also with this being well said, one thing I might add is unaspected planets can also be as challenging as afflicted ones. For example one has a heavy chart in a couple elements and then one lone element wolf that doesn't aspect any other planets which can cause issues handling the good and bad aspects of that planet because it is not aspected or backed up by other planets. Lets say one has a heavy fire and air based chart and then throw in a mood based emotional water sign somewhere in there (especially personal planets) that doesn't aspect any of the fire or air planets, it would likely be challenge to handle the emotional and mood heaviness of the water sign whereas with other earth or water signs in the chart it would be better supported and understood by the native if that makes any sense.
