I'm curious how you all got your start? Are you self taught, or did you actually take classes/become certified? Did you have a mentor who guided you? When did you finally make the transition into offering services professionally? Lastly, do you find having the ability to read an ephemeris neccessary, even though we have all the nice programs nowadays? (I sound like a math teacher, "You should be able to show your work without a calculator!!!) lol

I ask because I do see myself doing this full time professionally, and take the subject seriously. But definitely don't think I am ready at this point to offer services. The one time I did take $$ for an interpretation I had a hard time letting go of the reading "Oh god what did I miss? What did I not get?!" - I am also a perfectionist, I will not start a task unless I can perfect it, and will not finish one unless I think it is perfected. Often there are things I still miss which frustrates me. I hear this time and time again, "You should charge people for this! You are so good at it!" but that is coming from people who know NOTHING about astrology, so to them I'm an encyclopedia. However, to a pro I'm just a intermediate still getting my feet wet in many areas.

I am hesitant to sign up for classes, and spend the money if I find myself totally unhappy with the school. Do you pro's find that a certification is a necessity or did you find success going the self taught route? Right now I'm just focusing on continuing to build my library, reading as many books and articles as possible.

Also - is there a great national astrology publication I should subscribe to? Maybe a magazine or quarterly publication?

Welcome 12th House

That is a great question and I await answers from other people.

For me, I never expected to be an Astrologer. I have a Masters in Counseling but I was not attracted to traditional counseling.

It felt too canned to me. It felt like spin.

I worked in natural health for many years and then stayed home with children.

I had a terrible death in family and surrendered my life to God.

He gave me a great passion for Astrology. I worked in the Personal Readings Forum of LL for a full year for hours a day, just for the love of Astrology

I never expected to do charts for a fee. However, it just worked out that way and now 3 years later, I am in love with doing charts and I have found my true passion!

Thanks for asking

To answer how I learned Astrology. My fave author is Howard sasportas. I read all his books but i don't really like the ones with Liz Greene.

I read the funny Astrology books because it is more fun and easier to learn something through humor.

However, the most important thing was simply doing charts and asking people how each placement feels.

At first, it is daunting. Then, after a year or so, the new language starts to make sense.

My passion in Astrology is to teach because I like to give what I would have wanted.

I like to break down Astrology into it's simple parts and make it fun.

That is kind of my calling.

The most important thing is to do, do, do charts.

Start with the little you know and it will expand

Thank you for your answers!! It sounds like many teach themselves. I'm really starting to find that I like to study certain astrologers but others I just dont resonate with. Again, one of the many reasons I love this study! So many different interpretations

I'm studying charts over and over and over and over and over again. Looking at new ones, going through old ones that I've studied, etc. It seems that a big chunk of it is just memorizing the symbolism, memorizing things and then using intuition to understand how to interpret the big picture together (you just can't take one aspect, or one placement, it's such a big picture). You can't be too dry with your interpretations, but you can't be afraid to take a literal approach with the symbols. It can all be interpreted and interpreted and interpreted. I hope the excited buzz I get from looking at charts and reading them never goes away. I love looking at them and seeing the patterns! It's so fulfilling.

It just feels weird for me at this point to accept $$ for an interpretation (even though so many people have told me "you should! you should!". I was weird about $$ though when I taught Kundalini Yoga - I felt weird being paid to share that information! lol, like I wasn't advanced enough. I dont teach anymore (but one day probably will). Now I am just asking all my closest friends and family members, "let me study your chart for practice!" However, I'm like on my little astrology island in my personal world, and have maybe 2 people who get me when I say "Oh you have an intercepted 11th House in Aries and this means XYZ" lol. I'm so glad to have finally joined the forum! It's my people!!

In the personal reading forum, do the posters prefer a more advanced astrologer? Or could I practice my interpretations there? Is there an expectation of trade? (Like I read your chart so take a look at this for me). I'm like a million questions over here!

Thanks again for your kindness and responses! Really is cool to hear the different backgrounds!

Ami -- Yes I find that I also learn when I teach! I love the questions I get back when I teach something because a student always asks something and I think "Wow I never thought of it that way!" - I had a "girls" weekend with some friends a few months back, and did tarot readings for them and looked at all their charts for fun. We just sat around, drank wine and talked astro/tarot/esoteric things (IT WAS AWESOME) - But I found that I learned a lot from explaining their charts and then hearing their feedback in person -- From your posts around the boards it seems like you really take that approach, teaching not just telling, and it's helpful!

Hypatia -- That is good to know you are self taught!! I like self taught folks, they inspire me a lot (although schooling has it's pros too) - I never did well in school, EVER, but I find if I teach myself I do much better.
