I tend to think of the Saturn Return in terms of Foundation. When the first one comes, you take a good look at the life you have built, and decide whether that will be strong and stable enough to fashion the next stage of your building.
The second a bit before sixty.
Saturn is really your friend.
In the long term.
If you are thinking of the Saturn Seven Cycle, it is approximately that many years, a quarter of the full circling.
When it is across from or Square to the Natal positioning.
Grant Lewi thought of this Cycle in the same terms as a Lunar, waxing and waning.
Retrograde is when the Planet appears to be moving in a backwards motion, this will create a point being Transited three times in sequence the first pass, the backwards regression, then the resolving recapitulation.
When you are born with a Retrograde Planet, just a quick glance at an Ephemeris will tell you by the shading how long that Planet will remain in that motion.
By Progression, you take the first few months of your life, a year for each day unfolding, and you can tell when that Planet will start to become active.
It is a sort of back-burner thing, until it becomes Direct.
Also, take note of the Stationary position years. That Planet will take precedence at that time.
