I concur. It may be more focussing rather than 'dampening'. SATURN and KARMA aspects are very binding. I've noticed if one has them, and they're contacted by another point, this can be an intense situation. Rather as if you're bound to the individual with SATURN/KARMA.
The composite will feature similarly; instead of the individual 'binding' you, it's the relationship itself.
Interestingly, if you have one with the SATURN/KARMA, the relationship can be bound to their karmic pattern until cleared, presenting in the manner of points in the composite. In our case, the cVENUS-SUN is bound to his karmic pattern; as this also conjoins my nMOON-URANUS, I often feel emotionally (MOON) tied and unable to break free of it (URANUS). The very core (SUN) of the relationship is affected, as well as our expression of affection (VENUS).
Taking into account this is an 'objective' of the relationship itself (since it's a composite aspect), you may ask what of its karmic pattern is binding you to it, and each other, and how is it best cleared?
MARS afflicted from the 8H likely points to how misplaced rage becomes sexualised and can trigger deep-seated psychological blocks.
I'd look to see what both PLUTO and PSYCHE are doing. Is EROS involved? How is the 8R positioned? What houses are SATURN, MARS, and the SUN ruling? Are the 8R and SUN making an aspect? Can it help ease tensions of the square?
MARS and the SUN are deep drives in a composite; when the core of the relationship (identity) is frustrated, psychological blockages start appearing.
Look to the 12H to better understand what blocks are likely to show.
