Two years, about the amount of time it takes for the infatuation period to wear off...

After that point, he became emotionally abusive and I had to cut him loose. He was also confused spiritually, and too wrapped up in his Ego.

Intellectually and physically compatible; spiritually and emotionally, not so much.
I did grow to love him, but I think he was mostly infatuated with me.

It must have been you closing his Grand Trine with Venus and Moon with your Neptune

Your love planets are a bit unaspected though, for both of you: your Mars, your Venus, his Mars only sits on your ASC, which is a strong physical attraction aspect, but I'm not sure how long it lasts without backup. His Moon is a bit lonely too.
