Every relationship has its own share of challenges and tension which led me to always wonder about this, because I hear different opinions on which aspect is harder to deal with.

Some say that squares are more challenging because they create friction and " internal" struggles/strifes within a relationship which is generally hard to solve while opposition are easier since the solution of "compromise" is possible.

On the other hand, some say that oppositions are harder because they signals "incompatible" energies where the lovers/partners can find themselves in an endless struggle of " pull and push". They say that Squares, as hard as they are, are what help a relationship grow, mature and thrives which is not the case for oppositions.

Let's take the example of Pluto square Venus and Venus Opposition Pluto.
What do you think guys ?

I disagree with both

I think hard aspects all bring action, attraction, events, tangible manifestation, doing things together in synastry/composites. Especially squares (conjunctions are more about merging and union, still their difficulty lies in the reverse, the lack of distance and objectivity). Other 4th harmonics bring more events, action, changes, doing things together. Oppositions are a great factor of attraction and fusion through complementarity (potentially). They are like the backbone of a natal/synastry/composite. There is something in the opposition that makes the two planets chase each other endlessly.

I think it depends on what is predominant in the natal. I have almost all squares and conjunctions in my chart. Almost all of my planets are part of one big major T-square. That makes it easy for me to handle square energy. Actually, I really need square energy in a relationship or it is simply as DULL as dirt.

Opposites, though, are a totally different story for me. The energy is harder for me to handle because I have less of it in my chart. I notice it immediately, but I don't seem to be able to process it as well.

For example, my husband and I have his Mercury in Libra squaring my Mars in Cancer 2°. This causes 99% of our arguments, but we are able to head off many arguments because I can recognize and relate to the square energy so well and know how to handle it. A real world example of this might play out like this: We'll be casually discussing something and my watery Cancer Mars will be processing what's being discussed in an emotional feeling way, while he's processing it all with his airy Libra Mercury logic and reason. This creates a very "Spock vs Bones" dynamic. We usually avoid arguments from it, though, or at least, they end up being short and sweet, because I recognize what's going on and can handle the energy of the square since I'm so used to it natally.

It's a completely different story if someone has their Mercury opposite my Cancer Mars. My Cancer Mars will perceive their Cap Mercury as way too cold and unfeeling. They'll usually get condescending with me because I'm being emotional, and I'll react with a "well, at least I have emotions you heartless ******* " type dynamic. Way uglier arguments ensue. We'll end up arguing way longer and way louder and something hurtful will end up being said by one person or the other. It's much harder for me to deal with that opposition because I'm just so unused to the opp. energy. I'll get way more frustrated with them than I will a Libra Mercury or Aries Mercury that squares my Mars. So, I'm glad my husband and I have the square instead of the opposition. Handling the square just comes more naturally to me.

I believe if someone had more oppositions in their chart and little or no squares, then those examples would be reversed.

It's so dependant on the specifics. A Sag sun opposite mine in Gemini tends to play out as "I was waiting for *you* to decide"... Venus in Sag about 15° earlier opposite my Merc and Vertex in Gem completes a Grand Cross for me and played out in a long term relationship very nicely... except maybe for the Sat-Moon opp DW... but I digress...

I agree there is a good point here...it depends a lot on the natal charts and the energies each natal is responsive to.

Thanks guys for the insight. I have to say that Wild Horses's reply clarified a lot of things for me

I do NOT have a single Opposition in my Chart. It's all conjunctions, mostly squares and Trines. so I'm very familiar wit how Squares work.

I have harsh squares to my Moon from Uranus and Neptune and I think those aspects are the main culprit why my romantic relationships never last or work for that matter.. Even though I dated guys who aspected my Moon nicely yet I was not happy, I did not feel safe.

Finally, I have settled down in a quite satisfying relationship with someone whose placements I never considered before.

In synastry his Uranus and Neptune form a lovely double trine to my Venus and my Pluto and Venus to his Moon.

My Moon falls in his 7th House, unaspected, which intensifies its impact and feels so comfortable for me. It's like there is no "pressure" on my usually claustrophobic Moon thus that feeling of ease and safety.

We also Mars conjunct Neptune ( he satisfies my fantasies), Sun Trine Venus and ASC conjunct DESC.

We also have two aspects that are given a terrible rep in the world of synastry. They're Venus square Saturn and Venus Opposition Pluto. but you know ? those aspects work just fine for us..He grounds me and without Saturn and Pluto, I don't think we would have stayed together in the first place.
