Both our Mercuries are unaspected (unless you count minor aspects and some pretty wide ones).
They're widely quincunx each other (2°) and my Mercury makes a wide sextile to his Jupiter (4°); and we have a Mercury/Saturn DW but with minor aspects (semi-square and sesquiquadrate). We have very different ways of communicating, and our ideas are very often opposite. We don't really "argue" (yet) but our ideas and beliefs are opposite (that might also be due to the fact that we have a Venus/Saturn hard aspect DW, and his Venus rules his 3H).
However we don't really have trouble talking to each other and discuss many things, it's just that he often takes on the "teacher" role and I the "student".
So I sometimes feel like my ideas or thoughts aren't valued by him, because I'm more right-brained / spiritual and he is more left-brained / "rational".
But there was one time where one guy's Mercury was unaspected by my planets (and I think mine too) and it was really difficult to simply talk to that person. It was like there was nothing at all there - making conversation was incredibly difficult (again, our interests were widely different).
So I suppose minor aspects and even wide aspects still count, making things easier. If there's a complete lack of aspects, especially both ways, communication is pretty much a permanent struggle.
Ps. Also pay attention to the ruler of the 3H and the 3H in synastry in general.
