Welcome to LL, dahlia.

Astrology is the ever-unfolding mystery and the gift which keeps on giving. Much like black belt Judans, even when we are well beyond the point of student, we never quite obtain the position of 'master' because there is always more to know, explore, and grow into.

I'm sure everyone will enjoy sharing with you their favourite books and websites. If you're up for a 'cookbook' style synastry book -- which means you can look up individual aspects and see their interpretations -- Linda Goodman's 'Relationship Signs' will always be a classic starter -- and one to which even us pros refer to for its excellent advice and optimism.

In the first ex you mentioned a Leo and a cancer. It's very common to be with someone whose sun in the sign next door to yours "semi-sextile." This has happened so often in my family, to list the pairs would take forever. I myself am a Sag sun who was married to a Cap, and have dated (and am currently dating) many Scorpio Suns. There is a sense of familiarity, where the two signs blend before they become different.

I was thinking about the merging thing... how to explain it.

It's like geography.
If you are travelling from one state to abother, and you cross the state line, you are no longer in one state, you're in another. But it takes awhile to notice a difference in the landscape. It doesn't radically change just bc you've crossed that line, you know? Semi sextile signs are the same way. Esp for people at one end or the other. The truest energy is in the middle.

But for you're original question... many things to take into account. Like house placements. I'm a Sag, but my sun and venus are in the 8th house, Scorpios house. So it makes sense I'd feel a kinship with them. Plus my merc, nept and SN are in scorpio. So while sun signs do matter to a degree, in general compatibility, when it comes to true relating , like in love rekationships, much more is involved.

They say that some of the signs are too strong to have two of in one relationship. Course that is just speculation from an astroger, but yet it does ring true. Two cancers sound good, to me. But two Leos sound like someone will always fight for the spotlight. Completely depends on the people... their moons, mars, and venus placements. Their asc... their houses.
As I said, I'm a sag, and I tried to live with another sag once when I was very young. Lol. We never seemed to be home at the same time! Eventually we mutually agreed to break up. And so for me, Sags feel like siblings. Sag suns that is. But Sag moons, Asc and venus, totally different story. I adore them.
I hope I'm getting the feel for your question! It's so hard reading tiny phone screen...

They had some negative karma from a past life to clear up. One the karma was cleared, the relationship was also cleared.

But it didn't end in a good way, so how can this be considered "clearing up karma"?

It's because it ended, the karma was cleared up. No more debts between your friend and his boyfriend from a past life. They are at peace now so to speak.

The SUN semisextile SUN phenomenon tends to be linked to the presence of many shared midpoints, as well as personal planets.

High likelihood that both will have MERC or VENUS in the same sign, or one making soft aspects to the other's MARS.

Then, to explain the midpoints, look at it this way.

I'm a VENUS/MARS=SUN; this means my SUN is conjunct the degree of my VENUS/MARS midpoint. I dated many a Virgo SUN, and had a passionate creative, 'ambiguously platonic' relationship with a fellow Libran man, even though it's rare that I feel anything but friendship for male Librans; they're more often 'my brothers' than my lovers. Virgoan men, though? That was a pattern, for several years.

I suppose, with the Virgo SUN men, it was their VENUS in Libra, and my VENUS in Virgo. It's a nice mutuality for affection and friendship, sometimes romance.

Curiously, only one Scorpio, and he's a 1°. I've been 'momentarily magnetically intrigued' by men with their SUN on my MOON, (Scorpio) but it never amounts to anything. Even with my huge Scorpio stellium; rien.

The Virgo SUNs often had Scorpio MARS, though. And my own is just into SAG, at 0°03. Many times, their VENUS/MARS would end up within 2° of my SUN.

So, it's midpoints and shared points, in my view.
