This actually depends upon the past life relationship(s) of the two souls in question. However, Node/Moon aspects can be part of it, as can Moon with Venus/Sun/Jupiter/Mercury, etc.

Understand that having one or two of these in synastry with someone does not necessarily mean that they are your 'soul mate.' Chances are greater if you meet such a person, but there will be something like glue to keep such soul mates connected, even if loosely. If there is no such connection maintained over time, then it is more likely you have more what we'd call karmic burden or no 'soul mate' bond at all.

Important point: IF you meet a soul mate, you won't need to define it that way with astrology. It will be obvious over time and will be there regardless if you see it in the synastry.
