Rather than cast an apprehensive eye towards things you see in a love interest's chart or in your synastry aspects, let's look at what forms the basis for soul level connections. These are the synastry factors that form a basis for moving forward in a close relationship.

You have probably already experienced this with more than one person. Most likely your parent's, a sibling's, or best friend's synastry with you show these kinds of aspects. They also extend to romantic interests.

* Your Moon in aspect to their Sun / vice versa. Conjunctions, parallels, sextile, trines, are preferred, but squares, oppositions, and contra-parallels work too. They just work in a different way and may require more effort to find a harmonious balance between you. With other flowing aspects it can still be well worth the effort.

* Your Moon in aspect to their Mercury, Venus, or Jupiter. Same aspects as above. The Moon aspects with Venus or Jupiter can score a lot of points towards a solid synastry, even the challenging ones.

Either person's Moon in any aspect to the benefics (Sun, Venus, Jupiter) of another's chart is helpful.

* Your Moon or Sun in flowing aspect to their Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto (parallel, conjunct, sextile, trine). Such flowing aspects involving Moon to outer planets is indicative of trans-personal soul growth already achieved, so there is more trust to start with.

* Your Moon, Sun, Venus, or Jupiter in aspect to their Nodes / vice versa. This gives a feeling of familiarity, knowing where to start (S.Node) or the feeling of a future to aim towards (N.Node).

* Your Sun in aspect to their Mercury, Venus, or Jupiter.

* Your Moon or Sun in harmonious aspects with their Neptune / vice versa. Neptune is the higher octave of Venus and take do as much or more than it to create harmony, understanding, and compassion.

* Your Mercury [for communication, unity of minds] in aspect with any of their planets and vice versa -- but especially the flowing aspects to any planet. Good Uranus aspects (or Neptune as above) can make up for not much Mercury activity going on.

* Your Venus in any flowing aspects (parallel, conjunct, sextile, trine) to their Mercury, Mars, Saturn, Uranus, or Neptune, Pluto. It doesn't really matter what you first love about them or love most about them, just that you do.

It doesn't matter if there are some significant challenging aspects. All relationships have them. What does matter is that you've got enough to build on for the relationship to develop in this lifetime. So that means a number of these types of aspects that create a total that is at least slightly on the positive side, or even in number with the challenging aspects if there is solid Sun/Moon/Asc bonding.

Jupiter aspects go a long way to helping overcome the challenges of stressful Saturn, Mars, or Pluto aspects -- especially Jupiter aspects to Asc, Moon, or Venus.

A lot of us feel Venus/Mars-related contacts with others' charts, but these by themselves won't sustain a relationship. They can create an innate feeling of chemical attraction, but synastry needs indications of good communication, as well as some Saturn and/or Pluto for staying power.

Also, Venus and Moon are better in flowing aspect with Pluto (sextiles, trines). So watch for obsessive attraction becoming unhealthy early on with such a synastry dynamic. Know that if you are involved with someone with stronger Venus-Pluto aspects (parallel/conjunct, square, opposite/contra-parallel), there may be challenges to the emotional basis with compromises required. Similar for Venus and Moon with Neptune.

Know what you can handle and pay attention to the subtler feelings, not just the obvious stronger ones. In the end it takes two to tango. Don't waste time pining for someone who won't come along. Affection is for the one who will receive it and appreciate you for who you are. There are plenty of other potential partners out there.

Yes, I can't agree more on this. Trine/sextile is like one of the best flowing aspect to have in synastry especially involving venus or moon to Pluto. Can't understand why some like conjunction, it can be too much challenges to get through and can be toxic, but.. this is just me.

Kannon - what would you say to this synastry? Would there be enough positives to sustain or would the negatives eventually catch up with them?

Kannon,

Hi, thank you for the article. I have a question about Venus aspects.

"Your Venus in any flowing aspects (parallel, conjunct, sextile, trine) to their Mercury, Mars, Saturn, Uranus, or Neptune, Pluto. It doesn't really matter what you first love about them or love most about them, just that you do."

1) If we concentrate on Venus aspects alone, would you say these aspects show how much someone is likely to fall for another person because they - Venus do the liking or is Venus not always on the receiving end?

Example:
my Venus sextile his Sun, conjunct his Mars, square his Pluto
his Venus makes Five aspects to my planets, so many. Sextile my Sun Neptune conjunction, conjunct my Moon Mars conjunction, trine my Pluto.

2) You did not include Sun and Moon. In Moon Venus conjunction, how does Venus feel?

Thank you!

P.S. this is not exactly related to the content in your article but I thought I'd ask anyways, maybe you could help me with this question too. It's about aspects between house rulers in synastry. When I'm looking for 5-7 link, for example --- ruler of my 5H trine the ruler of his 7H, that's a link. What about ruler of his 5H in my 7H? Is That a link, is that significant?

margym0o,
I'd like to respond, but I prefer a synastry chart with the planets positions listed and a statement of whether both persons have reliable, specific birth times.

CapriciousCapricorn,
I think Venus aspects can show a lot about how much affection can easily grow between two people, especially those aspects you list. Moon-Venus was mentioned -- the conjunction or parallel, a very, very good feature to have in synastry like a natural hand-in-glove fit. The affection is there and deepens easily.

Hi Kannon! Awesome article as usual!

I have some of thise going on in my synastry with my crush. I think especially my moon trine his venus is a great effect.

I just wanna ask quickly about this paralel stuff. I have read up about those, but I have hard time understanding them, it seems so complex. ALthough I was able to find a "match", I just wanna ask you if I have interpreted it right.

In my Declination list my Venus has this numbers :2°41'57" N

And my crush has his Pluto with this numbers: 2°10'45" N.

My Venus in Aries his in Scorpio.
But does those degrees and being in North make them "Paralell" to each other? Have I understood it right?

I would like to know more about parallels as well.

How do we find parallels?

**(Step by Step instructions needed, preferably using the Astrodenist online software)**

How do you calculate other synastry aspects as well?
(Midpoint, for example).

& what are Declinations?

margym0o, I'll go through this step-by-step so that you and others reading can see how I approach this. First, you'll need to seriously tighten the orbs of that synastry so that nothing over about 7° wide shows in the aspectarian, and that is for Moon or Sun aspects. Synastry is essentially transits (of someone's birth moment) to your natal chart. So you'll want to set the orbs to around 70% or so.

Next, we'll count up how many aspects fit positive/supportive vs negative/challenging.

Melinn, Moon-Venus aspects of any kind are always good, and a trine is very nice, but a bit lazy with those two. So be sure to add a bit of effort to bring it more into play. As to parallels, your Venus at 2° north is parallel his Pluto. You understand correctly. If your Venus were at 2° south, it would be contra-parallel his Pluto at 2° north.

Yanmorg, when you are looking at a chart in astro.com, look right above the chart image to the link "Additional tables (PDF)" --> click on that and it will open up another tab (data sheet) that will display the declination positions of every planet under that heading -- Declinations. They are the north-south movements of the planets.
Click here to read about Declinations in more depth.

I've had pretty good synastry in the past with people I didn't last more than a month, I have a pretty challenging Synastry with the guy I'm dating but I couldn't be more happy reading all of this, cause yes OUR synastry is full of squares yet I know even if that means WORK doesn't mean its not worth it.

We have a double whammy Sun square Moon.

My Moon square his Mercury and Neptune, trine Uranus and opposes Mars.

His Moon square my Mercury and Venus.

We have Mars opposite Venus, I'm Mars.

Working progress but couldn't be more happy with this guy.

Excellent. Thank you. See how much clearer this aspectarian is now?

So we count up just the major aspects to get an overall picture. I mark the supportive aspects +, and the challenging ones -.

Sun closely trine Moon-Jupiter, very good ++
... conjunct Mercury +
... opposite Mars -
Moon opposite Moon -
... sextile Mercury, Jupiter ++
... trine Mars +
... quincunx Uranus -
Venus conjunct Sun +
... quincunx Venus +
... square Jupiter +
... opposite Uranus -
Mars square Mercury, Mars --
... quincunx Jupiter -
... sextile Uranus +
Jupiter trine Sun +
... square Venus +
... sextile Neptune +
... conjunct Pluto, S.Node ++
Saturn sextile Uranus +
Uranus trine Venus +
... conjunct Saturn -
Neptune opposite Sun -
... square Jupiter -
(... conjunct Uranus)
... trine N.Node +
Pluto trine Sun +
... square Mercury, Mars --!
... sextile Uranus +

Count those + and - up and see what you get.

If you want declinations, you'll have to show me something that at least has the actual planet positions listed -- not just aspects or a circle wheel.

Wow thank you, it looks like the positives outweigh the negatives! Although there are some harsh aspects there so I wasn't sure if those were weighted more heavily.

Here are the declinations:

Person 1 ... person 2
Sun parallel Mercury, N.Node, Venus +++
Moon parallel Uranus +
Mercury parallel Mercury, Venus, N.Node +++
... contra-parallel Neptune -
Venus parallel Sun +
... contra-parallel Uranus -
Jupiter parallel Saturn -
Uranus CP Mercury, N.Node --
Neptune CP Sun, Venus -
N.Node CP Jupiter +

So add +9, and -6 to that.

Now as to particular aspects indicating soul connection, I have shown those in bold here. Plus, the zodiac aspects from above:
Sun/Moon-Jupiter
Venus/Sun
Jupiter/Venus, Node
Neptune/Node

So I can understand the attraction and interest. Whether it develops into a romantic relationship is another story. We have many soul mates and obviously can't partner with all of them.

Thank you very much Kannon!

Thanks to this paralell thing I have found one more awesome connection, his Eros Contra paralell my Psyche for ex and lots of other interesting asteroid connections to each others planets. But the asteroids are so hard to look up and note down etc, they are so many . But yeah, they just show what I have been feeling, that we really have a great vibe together. I have posted our charts up once but got no reading luck Maybe I will try again

First a bit of a tutorial for everyone on how to use your options in astro.com ....

Please -- Please -- PLEASE stop picking the first option for synastry charts (as above) that gives no tick marks or degree markings for the planets. There should be no guess work or estimating in this effort!

Instead ...

--> Select the second option for synastry charts: Synastry chart w. outer circle (2) This creates a chart that is easier to read with tick marks for every degree around the zodiac and the degree and minute of arc for every planet for person 1 (inner circle).

Liz Greene style is preferable since it eliminates distracting colors that are not attached to the specific information of that chart. It will produce a cleaner chart like this:

I don't get into all the permutations of asteroids. Ask Todd.

I stick with planets because they are what really matter. You could waste a lot of time looking at the vertex, the asteroids, and still not work up the nerve to take a risk with your heart and put yourself out there.

We don't need to splatter every object or good idea astrologers have ever had onto a single chart -- especially not on synastry/composite charts. Just my viewpoint.

The keys are:

--> Does the synastry show a majority of positive/supportive aspects over negative/challenging ones? If not, be cautious enough to let things happen naturally over time, but don't close any doors. You might need a dual chart verification to see if the Asc and MC alignment tips things more positively.

--> Does the synastry show more hard aspects of Mars/Saturn/Pluto than pleasurable ones of Moon/Venus/Sun/Jupiter? If so, you can do better, or at least know it will be work, not a smooth ride.

--> Does the synastry show at least a few of those aspects with Sun/Moon/Venus/Jupiter/Nodes plus some Mercury for communication? If not, it is likely your attraction is a fleeting 'chemical' response seen more in Venus/Mars or Moon/Mars, etc.

--> Does the synastry show hard, difficult aspects (squares, contra-parallels/oppositions) by Saturn, Pluto, Uranus, Neptune to the (North) Node? If so, there must be enough compensation by the benefics. If too many of those hard ones, the relationship will not feel like it has a positive future (with at least one person). You can do better.

Yes I think asteroids are very much messy. Although if it's asteroids that is suppose to be a "pair" like Eros and PSyche I'm sure it's significant. Or if it's a bigger one like Juno. Asteroids are like the salt and pepper of a food.

I understand, the chart needs to be well balanced with heavy planet aspects vs the personal "positive" ones. Its just sometimes it may look like its "dommed" with too many heavy planet aspects but maybe that one will last the best, dunno I have not studied enough charts, hell I just recently have came to important insights about my own chart

Informative article as usual Kannon. I've recently been learning about declinations as I only discovered what they were this year. A lot of what I've read matches up with what your saying here -

Sun/Moon = Strong Bond
Moon/Venus = Peacefulness
Moon/Mars = Volatile/Exciting

Until I read this on CafeAstro -
Venus/Mars paralell - 'Romantic/sexual attraction, competitiveness which can be stimulating. There can also be quite a bit of posing, cat and mouse, “foreplay” that is not always of the pleasant variety.'

I don't understand their definition, does it mean just a lot of intense game playing ?

I don't really understand their definition either. I think someone is taking their own personal experience in a relationship and extrapolating it to that particular synastry aspect alone.

Venus Parallel Mars is very much the same as Venus conjunct Mars, just not as obvious as when they are both conjunct and parallel. Affection (Venus) meets action (Mars). This is not just romantic, but could be good in creative partnerships too.
