I have a feeling this is a stupid question but I was pondering this morning whether pattern completion in a composite or synastry is ALWAYS a good thing? People look at it as one of the pre requisites of a good satisfying relationship but can it also be challenging too and not something the individual is after??

The completion, I'd say YES, even in a case of T-square when completed to a Grand Cross. The missing leg of my potential Grand Cross is 22' Aqua and I get calmed down when someone puts something there...well, I take that back a notch - except for Saturn, Saturn kind of makes me simmer for a while before I remove that irritant at once. But anything else is welcomed, even Mars. I had someone put their Mars in there and I was extremely calm in their company, like in a zen mode. Which is bizarre.

I am not so sure, thou, about a situation where one person has already a completed pattern and someone else comes and adds more to it, I don't think this could be always good, it might be annoying or irritating as If the other is spoiling the balance.
In a case of a Grand Trine in someone natal chart - that native is so closed off and self-sufficient with their own Grand Trine, that when someone else tries to put a planet there, they will not be allowed, they will be booted off.
However, when someone else's planet completes another trine to a Grand Trine, than it is a bliss, its is very good. I know it first hand! The missing leg of my potential Grand Trine is at 11' Aqua ( again aqua) , and I feel an immediate connection, a good one, when someone with an 11' aqua planet comes in orbital proximity

Innnnteresting!

I think I had a Grand cross in the composite with my ex husband. That ended badly but we were in a relationship for 10 years. Rollercoaster ride though.. drai-NING!

So you think it generally gives people a feeling of calm when there’s completion?

Lol at “booted off” 😂

I think so, but in terms of a T-square becoming a grand cross we'd be looking at potentially karmic issues.

I wouldn't expect that to be very successful in the long-term (unless it's just personal planets) but a life changer regardless.

On that note I thought I'd check my Mom's chart, as I know she has a lot of squares. She has a strong T-square of Jupiter 17 Sagittarius, Neptune 14 Virgo, Mercury 15 Gemini-Chiron 18 Gemini.

As you can imagine she's very creative. Making an almost Grand Cross is Saturn 22 Pisces, but get this.... My Dad's Uranus at 18 Pisces. Completing the T-square, adding a little random to Saturn and changing her life for good.

She said she was a nervous wreck from her childhood but gradually with my Dad she calmed down and basically he made her laugh every day. I should mention they lasted 50+ years until he passed (he was 12 years her senior) <3

So that shows a Grand Cross success story quite well I think. :-)

We most definitely had karmic issues!

I’m so happy to hear it worked for your parents. 50 years is an absolute milestone.

I had more of a calming effect on my ex than he did with me.

Is completion more important in synastry or composite you think?

And is there any info on the different effects of the different patterns? I.e bucket, kite etc.

Hi EmGem,

I'm not sure, I've not really done my research on composites. I wonder what Todd thinks?

My feeling would be that a strong patterns in composite provide a relationship structure but I certainly wouldn't like to see a t-square or a grand cross with Saturn and Pluto both involved. A grand trine is always good though and kites intrigue me in the composite.

In synastry you can 'complete' another person's missing angle/point and I think that's the magical element really. If you feel that you are more whole with the other person than without them, it makes absolute sense that the relationship would stand the test of time.

Although I already have a grand trine, crossing over from air to water, I do absolutely love it when somebody fills in the 'missing water point'. I've a history of feeling connected to people with a planet at 1-3 Scorpio (yep, that specific!)

I think a synastry overlay of a kite could count as a stronger overall structure than the grand trine alone. A bucket isn't mathematically specific though, so I wouldn't count that as relevant. Although I do personally like to see conjunctions in synastry, for myself it's simple not a strong enough attraction if there aren't conjunctions involved!

Relationships for me always reflect where u are in life relative to how u feel about yourself.

The more good you feel about yourself, the more you will attract those that will add to that. These ones will be very nice to you.

The less good you feel about yourself, the more u will attract those that will add to that. These ones will make u question/doubt yourself a lot.

So if you have a natal T-square that is functioning on autopilot. Attracting another with a planet completing the grand cross(also functioning on auto pilot) can only lead to drama!.

But if you are aware of your natal challenges, the partnerships you attract will reflect that awareness i.e either the partner will be conscious themselves or be the type who wants to be and is working towards that.

There is no "one glove fits all" with synastry. Its very unique in each case- depending on the type of people involved.

Well in our case it wasn't good, his Venus made a perfect KITE with my natal minor grand trine Pluto/Venus/Jupiter-Neptune.

My Sun made a DOUBLE Yod from his natal Yod Mars/Neptune/Pluto. And My Uranus made a perfect grand trine from his natal Mars/Moon trine.

Damn no, he's getting on my nerves after 24 hours and then I HAD to go home to his utter dismay. Drama Drama! This was the worst I ever had I swear. I won't go into detail.

We even had a PERFECT pattern completion in the composite!

And look at this new girl of him, living together both .. seemingly NO completion at all! Well, SEEMINGLY .... there are other - deeper - forms of completion which for a part noticeable in the composite (but in another way than mentioned before in ours).

Also let's not forget the LUminaries;

Us: Sun/Sun square - Moon/Moon square (exact opp. phase!)
Theirs: Sun/Sun trine - Moon/Moon trine (exact same phase!)

Their progressed Lunar Phases work PERFECTLY together for life.

Blabla . . . . .

This is what jumps out at me, with your lovely grand trine the major complications of this configuration would be overwhelming.

No matter how good the synastry is, the basic and seemingly most important factor is whether you have similar needs/wants/views about life generally. Hence the mirror aspects being so integral.

Nevertheless, this is a great example of an edgy type of chart and hence a person who prefers disparity to comfort. (At this point in his life anyway). I suppose if you are naturally untrustworthy, a genuine person may seem unnatural and suspicious. Whereas a more complicated person who can play out the expected dramas is far more comfortable!

Such an infinitely fascinating subject isn't it, you simply can't make rules, it has to work on a chart by chart & person by person basis. :-)

Gosh how I love your Cancer-Moon.. u nailed it~!!

Guess what... his current g-f he's living together with is 14 years his senior and has ALSO the same Yod Mars/Neptune/Pluto with... yesyes Mars also at the APEX! Both their Mars even make a QUINDECLE to Uranus while Uranus in both natals exact on the IC!! (and ofcourse this is what you also all get in the composite then - in their compo: that Yod ofcourse + Mars/Uranus opposition even falls exactly on the IC/MC axis and this exact square the Nodes!)

(My own Mars just makes a square to my Moon/NN and that's all there is, while my Venus only makes soft nice aspects! // while his Venus/Desc square Uranus/IC!)

Rrrreally I found it Always sooooo hard to believe/imagine that he would be able to live together with ... well, anyone! This roughness / bluntness / weed addiction "proneness" etc. of him ... we were ONLY good when I saw him again after some weeks with a wine and listening to music with many tealights on... (that was our Venus/Venus trine!) but as soon as "everyday life" jumped in.... @#$^% #$%&

(my take was: if I can get him to be satisfied with seeing each other now and then for not too long! while being "faithful" too ofcourse, then we might have a nice life! - but as expected: it was never ever enough for him... he couldn't believe I was in love or loved him because of that while I couldn't believe he didn't notice that HUGE struggle between us throughout the day)

EDIT@ ow and you know what he said to me now and then? "You are too good for me" (I swear I hated that as it says... well, ENOUGH!)

Sorry Mir, I've just seen your response. Gosh he doesn't sound like a fun man to be in relationship with.

At least with his current partner all of their mirrored aspects will bring about the same expectations of drama and complications. I shouldn't laugh but human nature is amusing really....

Isn't it funny when you think of how many of us have this in built desire to 'rescue' the troubled soul, and yet so often all the troubled soul wants is another troubled soul so that they don't look into their partner's eyes and see how messy they are. We create our own mirror not just by energetically attracting where we are in our lives, but also by choosing the comfort of our woes.

I've met so many people who are more comfortable to be unhappy but in a predictable place, than those who wish to risk evolving. No judgement, it's their life and their path....but I do tend to choose friends who want to live vividly and courageously.

Mir I think he was right, you are too good for him. Not because he can't be good too, but because he's scared to step beyond his unhappiness and that's okay. You'll attract the right energy for you... :-)

What Aries23Degrees and waxlobster says: the devil's in the detail and there are a substantial amount of variables.

I had one kite experience. My talent triangle apexed by my mars, was opposing his Saturn.

From a novice view, his air Saturn creating a grand trine with my air might've looked sweet.

But, Saturn opposite Mars is not good. Also in a kite, the energy is supposed to be focused at the apex. This felt true to me as I was too much Mars. Too wound up.

On the other hand, a different planet might do well, and wont get booted.

I also met someone with may grand trines overlaying each other and pretty much, all in air. He was a delicate, hyper-refined and insulated person. Anyone too close impacting a challenge to his trine was just too much for him.

The other thing about completed pattern figuration is that the two people can feel like your on a rollercoaster ride, or a carousel, depending on the planets. This can be annoying, or soothing, depending on all variables. It can feel claustrophobic to be locked into a dynamic that carries you like a tide out of your control.

What planets are involved, and what the natal planets are that describe the individual characters, are variables that need also to be inspected.

So many great points in this thread! I don't think it's necessary a perquisite but it has a lot to offer, potential lessons or experiences.

I had a few (4 suns, 2 Venus and 1 Mars) who added their planet to my existing kite pattern, on my ASC [ASC/Neptune/Pluto/Neptune, ASC square Sun]. They like the instant comfortably it came with but I operated independently.

I have an incomplete mystic triangle [Venus/Moon/Mars conjunct Uranus]. They were significant. 2 Venus were friends and 1 Moon was a lover. I def felt WHOLE and COMPLETE or a calmness but ended in broken heart.

What Aries mentioned is SO true for me I don't think it's mentioned enough + depending on the planets involved, if we love ourselves others add to it but I was the other way at the time I met the Moon + Venuses. For the moon, it was a strong connection and the feelings/attraction were mutual. Pattern completion can be highly gravitating and has potential growth for both or individual. For this connection, the growth was awfully painful - it was the innerwork and dealing with the split.

On the positive note of things, it was life changing for me. I grew and expanded so much. It helped me learn how to integrate my self-worth/values (Venus) + needs (moon) first within myself. So I am very grateful for that because I was struggling how to all these years. I considered the Moon my high level soulmate as it had its beautiful moments. We had a Kite in our composite too on the 7H angle + love stellium were part of it. I think this would have been a great relationship for a lifetime but you know I didn't love myself and attracted the same energy back.

That's very interesting!

Would be good to see the charts. Might make it clearer? But that can be hard to get around to doing..

I don't really get the aspects and pattern dynamics you are explaining.

It's great to hear your experience AND perspective
