This is a colleague who I once had a whirlwind romance with. We'd been acquaintances from afar for many years, but as soon as we got to know each other a little, it was unstoppable and we both fell madly in love. The chemistry was insane. But also ran hot and cold. We ended up hurting each other pretty badly and it all went up in flames.

We broke up and agreed to not contact each other again, because we were basically addicted to each other and needed to go cold turkey.

It's been awhile now, and we've both grown a lot. An opportunity has come up to collaborate professionally, and he reached out. Honestly, I miss him a ton and am tempted, but also worried I won't know how to keep things platonic/professional if we're back in touch -- we spiral immediately into extreme closeness every time we talk.

The Saturn square the sun/Jupiter/Venus/Mercury stellium has me wondering if this connection will just always have setbacks. The fighting is clear in all the Mars hard aspects in the synastry (Mars square sun, Mars opposite sun, Mars square Mercury).

Any thoughts on whether it would be a mistake to reconnect with him?

Synastry (also, it doesn't draw the line in the chart, but our moons are sextile - 4'49 orb)

Composite Saturn in the 12th house square to Venus along Composite Pluto/South Node unfortunately matches with your story, it looks quite difficult to keep a connection without reactivating old patterns, and at the same time it looks difficult to definitely stay away from this person.
Transiting South Node is currently conjunct the Composite Neptune/Uranus midpoint square to the IC/MC axis, so this seems what is triggering the new connection, even though South Node through Neptune/Uranus midpoint square MC is not a good omen, it's a very uncertain and divisive aspect, and as soon as transiting Jupiter retrograde is square to Composite Mars within early September such a new connection, whether you choose to go for it, might end up again in a difficult dejà-vù, basically with self-defence attitudes. But this is a strong unsolved karma that you have with this person, this might still take a little while before you definitely let go, and since the South Node is heading to enter the Composite 12th house hitting ASC/Uranus, this new connection might exactly lead you towards a letting go, but if so you need to go through this.

Thank you so much for your analysis! Yes, that's completely spot on. Keeping away from each other has been so difficult that we had to block each other on all avenues of communication (phone, email, social media) and even then it's still been hard. It absolutely does feel like there's karma here to work through, and that's unfinished. Interestingly, before we met he had no belief in reincarnation, but after what we went through started asking me if I thought we'd shared a past life together because there just isn't any other way to explain the instant familiarity. I'll be curious to see what happens in November.

Are there any indications of what kind of karma we're working through?

Hi featherlightly, I seemed to remember your story... when you said he wishes to reconnect, do you mean only in professional pursuit or romantically as well?

Overall your composite looks like there's a very strong bond and desire for partnership (the kite, Moon in 7H, Jupiter with stellium trine Pluto...) but it looks difficult at the same time. Neptune in 1H opposite Moon square MC gives elusion to the connection and while Moon is strong in Cancer, it's also insecure & fickle. Neptune, however, gives a very romantic/spiritual connection which makes people feel that this is an ideal partnership. Saturn in 12H square stellium and Uranus conjunct ASC explain why it was hot/cold and there was difficulty in combining your differences. Saturn in 12th may cause issues to lie non-existent until too much time has passed.

The 3rd house represents intellectual pursuits, creativity, communication so I see that what you're meant to do is probably to collaborate in this area, whether in a professional relationship or romantic one as well. Jupiter will give you a lot of courage and optimism but Saturn will not make this a walk in the park.

Whether or not you should reconnect is up to you because I believe we all need to walk the paths we need to walk... just make sure you go in with your eyes open.

Not easy to say, but in synastry you have a strong idealistic projection with the YOD formed by Neptune/Pluto to his Chiron/Moon/IC... Also, your Moon square his Pluto and opposite his Venus-your IC, so this is where the strong familiar feeling comes from, but since Neptune is involved and Composite Neptune is in 1st house opposite Moon, you might expect the other to be someone they're not and constantly get disappointed... with Chiron heavily involved in this projection in synastry and being opposite to the Saturn/Uranus midpoint in Composite, as you find the other is not who you were expecting to be, painful controlling and self-defence attitudes arise, especially at communication level (Chiron in Gemini).
Since North Node is in Taurus opposite Pluto/South Node, and with a Grand Kite involving the Neptune/Moon opposition, I'd speculate that a transformative karma of the relationship is required by accepting the other's different nature than the one you were expecting and which you had idealized as "familiar", so basically a letting go of that idealization of the other and a more realistic vision/knowledge/acceptance of the other's true nature (North Node in Taurus).

In November, transiting South Node will be conjunct to Composite ASC and Uranus, this might suggest a parting ways event, or emotional detachment, in any case a new phase where old patterns might be left behind, even though I guess a defintive letting go might occur as transiting South Node will be conjunct to Saturn later next year.
