http://theinnerwheel.com/2011/07/15/aspect-orbs-an-emergency-posting/ Because the sensitivity of each chart owner varies, we use orbs as a means of identifying if a person of average sensitivity is likely to feel/be conscious of the influence of an astrological indicator. ... And then we assess whether or not the owner of the chart is likely to be more or less sensitive than an average person, and adjust our orbs accordingly.
So ... because of that, and the reasons given in the linked article, each astrology student must decide for himself/herself what orbs to use for the chart which he/she is currently analysing.
However, until the astrology student has acquired the experience and confidence to do that, it is advisable to use tight/small/close orbs ... as that reduces the likelihood of the chart owner being unable to feel the influence of the astrological indicators that you will be discussing with them.
With Synastry though, I use orbs that are half those which I use for the natal chart of a person of average sensitivity ... because two natal charts = twice the number of potential aspects in the synastry chart.
