In synastry I use the same orbs as I do for transits: 5.5¢X max for planets (conjunction, square, trine, opposition), a bit more for luminaries; sextiles about 4¢X; parallels and contra-parallels certainly no more than 1¢X.

So for example, two people's Suns can be considered conjunct if within 7¢X, or a Sun-Moon conjunction within that orb. But Venus trine Mars I would only count if within 5.5¢X.

Some of the Astrodienst Chart Types produce variable orbs ... but I think all the synastry chart types use a default of 10 degrees maximum.

Orbs are just a mechanism for providing the chart reader with a cut-off point, beyond which he/she considers it unlikely that the chart owner will "feel"/be conscious of the astrological influence. ... Hence, we initially set the maximum at the point where (from personal experience) we currently believe the "average" chart owner is unlikely to notice the influence/effect of the related transit - then we adjust that maximum, if we have reason(s) to believe the astrological-sensitivity of the person we are reading for is likely to be above (or below) that of the average person.

Hence, some chart owners will feel the effect of a 7-9 orb aspect - but others will not ... and chart readers can only make an "educated guess" about who will and who will not. ... Thus, the responsibility for determining this rests with each chart owner - because an accurate assessment requires the chart owner to review what happens/has happened during transits, and note the orb at which he/she first noticed the event created by that particular astrological influence.
