So I noticed that astro.com uses different angles for synastry than for example astrotheme. I´m not sure which angles/degrees they use. On astrotheme I have mars square sun at about 5 degree with someone, and the same chart with the same time doesn´t show the square on astro.com. Did you notice a differnce when trying to get the right synastry and which site do you normally use/prefer ?

Also which orb would you still consider effective in synastry?

i've noticed this with a lot of synastry charts on astro, even tighter orbs sometimes you end up needing to look at the degrees

i dont like the look of a lot of other charts so i just suffer with that, if i dont like the way a chart looks i can't read it

I noticed it with nodes. Are 4 - 6 degrees aspects to nodes in synastry/ composite too wide ?

It sounds like this is the difference in the orbs used by these two sites.

In synastry I use the same orbs as I do for transits: 5.5¢X max for planets (conjunction, square, trine, opposition), a bit more for luminaries; sextiles about 4¢X; parallels and contra-parallels certainly no more than 1¢X.

So for example, two people's Suns can be considered conjunct if within 7¢X, or a Sun-Moon conjunction within that orb. But Venus trine Mars I would only count if within 5.5¢X.

I have to move this thread to Interpersonal Astrology.

So in synastry, would a wider orb of 7-9 really have no effect? Or just minimal?

I think the default for Astro.com is a 10 degrees maximum orb ... which can be increased or decreased via the display and calculation options. (For example, 60% gives a maximum orb of 6 degrees whilst 150% gives a maximum orb of 15 degrees.)

Some of the Astrodienst Chart Types produce variable orbs ... but I think all the synastry chart types use a default of 10 degrees maximum.

Because s synastry comparison (of two charts) doubles the number of potential aspects in a single natal chart, ... I use synastry orbs that are half the size of those I use for natal charts.

Orbs are just a mechanism for providing the chart reader with a cut-off point, beyond which he/she considers it unlikely that the chart owner will "feel"/be conscious of the astrological influence. ... Hence, we initially set the maximum at the point where (from personal experience) we currently believe the "average" chart owner is unlikely to notice the influence/effect of the related transit - then we adjust that maximum, if we have reason(s) to believe the astrological-sensitivity of the person we are reading for is likely to be above (or below) that of the average person.

Hence, some chart owners will feel the effect of a 7-9 orb aspect - but others will not ... and chart readers can only make an "educated guess" about who will and who will not. ... Thus, the responsibility for determining this rests with each chart owner - because an accurate assessment requires the chart owner to review what happens/has happened during transits, and note the orb at which he/she first noticed the event created by that particular astrological influence.

However, the astrological community is in full agreement with the belief that (for everyone) "the influence is strongest when the orb is exact; weakest when the orb is at its maximum and gradually increases/decreases in strength as the orb moves towards/away from exact".
