I have this with someone - double whammy, actually. It took me a long time, I'm talking like nearly 2 decades, but out of nowhere I found them breathtakingly beautiful and became attracted to them. It's like the chemistry was lying dormant this whole time, and then with some prodding it exploded into full bloom.

Were it not for this personal experience, I would absolutely believe that Venus/Mars squares would be a sign of repulsion/platonic energy.

Maybe it's because the Venus sq Mars DW turns into Venus conjunct Mars in our composite? It's something I turn over in my mind a lot trying to understand it.

However, it often indicates a deeper incompatibility outside of the bedroom (sometimes also in the bedroom, but the former is more common), and a kind of selfish, taking nature to the interaction on part of one or both parties.

It is a lust/hormone type pattern, and nothing more. If it is supported by more true loving type connections, then it can indicate a nice "spicyness" to the connection/relationship, but there will occasionally be issues, arguments, etc.

Personally speaking, I tend to avoid it when I see that I have it with another person (even if, and it usually is, the attraction is intense), because in my experience and observing others, most of the time it doesn't turn out well.

Venus opposite Mars often has the same very "charged" nature, and while it can also be challenging and very lust oriented, there is more potential for growth via eventual balancing affect on each other, should the two be able to put aside their egos to work on the relationship and on real love. I prefer Venus opposite Mars for these reasons.

Look at the very basic, most core, essential meaning. It just means, on that level, that the relating, giving, affectionate, true romantic, etc nature of one is in conflict/tension with the primal, animal, red energy of another (this can vary from sex drive to physical vitality to the Yang sense of "let's go out and get what we want/need", and/or general strong desire).

It certainly doesn't have to manifest as mutual or one way sexual attraction. However, that latter is another point not covered earlier. Sometimes it does connect to one person being intensely attracted, and the other not. Nor is there any hard and fast rule about it necessarily having to be either the Venus, or the Mars, person. It may tend, on average, to be the Mars person more, but again, no hard and fast rules.
