What do you see in charts when the obvious synastry and composite look horrendous? I mean god awful bad. I am trying to learn to look beyond the simple stuff.

I am not looking to know if a couple will live happily ever after. Some roads end after a few years but it was a very good few years.

You are right, no such thing as happily ever after. You could have the classic red flags in a composite or synastry and be happy yet frustrated at the same time .
However, if I see Mars squared Uranus in a composite, even if it is a wide orb of 10', I tend to go ouch! If I think of others I will edit this post.

What do we consider horrendous synastry or composite? It is entirely subjective, considering each person's natal chart focus and energy.

For someone with basically a Jupiterian natal chart, anything very Saturnian will feel horrendous and god awful. Though they might tolerate heavily Neptunian aspects.

Someone who already has a heavy Saturnian natal chart, might NOT find aspects such as Saturn square Venus or Moon in Synastry or composite horrendous... Most of us would balk at that kind of aspects, but they are already familiar with that kind of energy. They think relationships are things to WORK on.

Someone with heavy Uranian chart will not bat an eye at being in a relationship where the synastry or composite shows Uranus square to Venus or moon or Mars. Uranian people like unpredictability and relationships that defy the norm!

People with Neptunian chart may engage in relationships with the kind of heavy neptunian energy that would turn off most Saturnian or Plutonian types.

In short, when deciding if a synastry is horrendous or god awful, we need to keep in mind the individual natal charts to see if they actually already carry that kind of energy and can appropriately deal with it, however bad it looks to the rest of us.
