So regarding separating aspects...I've read different interpretations of these and I'd like to know what are you all's opinion of them.

So I've seen charts where a person will ask a question about an event that HASN'T happened yet and there was a separating aspect between querent and quesited/house cusp, and it was interpreted as it's going to happen and that's why there is a separation. But I learned that separating aspects are things that happen in the past. Which yes it's true, but what about those events that haven't happened and there is a separating aspect what does that mean?

IMO it would depend on the aspect: if it's a positive aspect like a conjunction, trine or sextile that is separating, I would say he could be a "yes" if other aspects support it. If it's a hard aspect (square or opposition) plus separating I would say most likely it won' happen.

Here is a silly question, how can you tell if two planets are separating? This is one thing that I often get confused about...

No silly questions here lol

Well for me I just look at the little "s" symbol next to the degrees in the chart grid lol, but you can also tell by looking at the chart and look at the degrees of the planets.

So you have Mercury and sun in the same sign. The sun at 16 degrees scorpio and Mercury is at 5 degrees. Mercury is the lower number and would be applying or heading towards the sun's direction, but once Mercury has surpassed 16 degrees or whatever degrees the sun is at, it begins to separate from it. That's how my brain process it anyway lol I'm sure someone could explain it better.

Also thank you tgem for answering my question.

Separating aspects SHOULD validate some past action. You have to put them in context. Sometimes they can signify something that's already in the works. Separating aspects are NOT the same as NO aspect, whether positive or negative.

If you're asking about relationships, a relationship has a starting point. No aspect and no reception is a definite NO. A separating aspect with reception could mean it's happened already or event you don't know about that will affect the situation are happening. A separating aspect with reception and Pluto or Uranus in 1st wrinkles my eye brows.
