I have cast a few charts recently, and have found that Saturn appears to be in the early degrees of a particular sign. Is this significant? - what if Saturn is one of the key significators?

Zero degrees are Critical Degrees, so a planet on that is stressed and cannot perform well, as you said, if the planet is a Significator, than it becomes an issue and should be taken into account.
