It is very important to understand planetary relationship in Vedic. I thought I'd start a thread on the subject, there are a few times when I have read wrongly given tables on the net.

Sun
Friends : Mo,mARS,JU
Enemies: Sat,Ve
Neutral: Me

MARS
Friends : Mo,Su,JU
Enemies: me
Neutral: ve,sat

MERCURY
Friends : sun,VE
Enemies: mo
Neutral: Mars,Ju,Sat

JUPITER
Friends : Mo,mARS,sun
Enemies: mer,Ve
Neutral: Sat

VENUS
Friends : Mer,sat
Enemies: moon,sun
Neutral: Mars,JU

SATURN
Friends : Mercury,ve
Enemies: Sun,moon,mars
Neutral: JU

MOON
Friends : sun,mercury
Enemies: -
Neutral: Mars,JU,SAT,ve

RAHU
Friends : ve,JU,sAT
Enemies: SUN,MOON,mars
Neutral: Me

KETU
Friends : mars,ve,saturn
Enemies: moon,sun
Neutral: Me,ju

who can tell me the most striking thing from this table?

Totally guessing here ….

I'd say that the thing that seems striking (in a wide-brushstroke way) is that Mercury has an ability to make Saturn feel better??

And Jupiter can get along with anybody!

(thanks soooo much, Jessica! ..)

Yes! This is fun. I do want to try again.
Just saw the corrected table a few minutes ago.

Let me have a time (maybe a day) to look it over, and contemplate a bit.

Thanks for doing this!

This had my imagination going for hours!

Sometimes I imagined each planet like it was a person, with personality likes and dislikes.

I 'saw' this list as though I had received this as part of some kind of event-planning. I was the hostess, trying to set-up round tables in a banquet or ballroom. Had to take into account each person's preferences. Who each person 'liked' and ones they preferred to be more distanced-from. Trying to make sure there was a better-flow for the various persons, combinations for table positions.

It could be compared to being a teacher, who got her class-list, and she is planning which students to put together in her rows or sections. Some students (planets) might be quite different from the other, but still, would be a good influence by their opposite or positively challenging viewpoints; or, the arrangement could be an inhibiting-influence-- for Good sometimes!

Here's one for MERCURY--- When Mercury combines with some of the planets, it is possible that it can take-on the nature of the planet that neighbors it?

Illustrative Story ….
I was a "talker" in elementary grade school. I wanted to socialize with other students. Became easily bored. Accused of being a daydreamer.
.. I would get corporal 'punishments' for talking and visiting, rather than paying attention to the teacher.

There were some personalities that would INSTANTLY bring out the "rowdy," playful and fun outrageous part of me. There were others who would just wall-me-out, and I'd feel 'soooo lonesome I could cry'? (song)

There were bullies in the yard and classrooms that I'd feel personally attacked and intimidated by.
.. But then, if I'd "see" someone else BEING bullied, I was 'there' at the rescue for strengthening that person, no matter how I felt about them. ..Pick on someone your OWN size?
.. I sucked at protecting my own self, but 'WOE to you' if you attacked someone I cared for, or when 'what is happening' is "not right"!

I could also vision these planets like variated-magnet balls, facets of which had various strengths and powers in spots/lines/layers in it. Attraction, repulsion, 'holding', suspending, or neutral-nothing.

So. These could be used for sky transits... Some times one is stronger-energy because of what it complements... then other times it's quieted or even shut-off, because of the power of the other magnets.

You can also 'hear' the planets as musical sounds, notes. Some 'cluster chords' are sooooo incredibly heaven-sending delicious, with overtones resonating tuning-forks in the soul.

HOWEVER-- Gnarly tones in bad-compressors in refrigerators??? are EVIL!! grrr

Quite an imagination you got going there Mirage

I believe the planets do have personalities and have likes and dislikes as well.

Well one most striking thing that can be seen from this table is that the Moon has no enemies.

However the moon is considered as an enemy by several planets namely mercury, venus, saturn and of course the nodes, rahu and ketu.

The second thing is that the natural benefics also have enemies!

Jupiter the great benefactor doesn't like 2 other natural benefics - mercury and venus but is neutral towards the Almighty saturn.

Third thing, although Venus is considered as an enemy by Jup, venus doesn't feel the same way towards Jup, he is quite neutral.

And the phenomenally most striking thing from this table besides the Moon not having enemies, tatata .... Saturn!!

ALL the planets (except the Sun) are either friends or neutral towards Saturn!!

BUT Saturn consider the moon, mars and sun as his enemies.

Interesting, Jessica.

Maybe heavy Saturn feels more cheered-up and encouraged after he's spent some time in the presence of 'Mercury and Venus' at the conversation table.

The Moon is friends with Sun and Mercury.
Moon is 'mind' .. Mercury is 'intelligence' and Sun is 'creative intelligence'.
..
QUESTION... Maybe the best place for rahu and ketu relative to the Moon is a square?..
Logic(?) for that is that the nodes would tend to 'fog' or take from the moon too much?
The square sharpens and adds distinction to the mind?
{just playing with thoughts and energies here}

Yeah I can see that

But why does the moon show no enmity towards the other planets? why does Saturn consider most of the planets his enemies but isn't considered as an enemy by them.

There is a simple formula to arrive at the above table.

The 2nd,4th,5th,9th,8th and 12th signs from a mooltrikona of a planet are said to be its friends, including the lord ruling the mooltrikona sign, the rest lords are its enemies. If friendship and enmity occur at the same time then none prevails except neutrality.

This is the natural relationships of these planets with each other not the horoscopic relationship.

Jessica .. According to the table on OP,
you list 'moon' as enemy with Mercury and Venus?

The question I asked about squares of nodes to moon belongs to 'western' astrology (sorry). Have to adjust between the systems.

*~

After you used the term Mool Trikona, I went on an information excursion for that.

It's similar to (western) Dignities table, only, a new column is added.

Planet has 1) best results in Exaltation,
2) then Mool trikona, {within a span of degrees}
3) and good sitting in its 'own sign'.

I understand a little further about strengthening and weakening...

Looking more into "counting" distances with houses.

Need to play with it to anchor. Going slowly so it will set.

Thanks same to you

about Saturn haha, yeah... made me lol

moon isn't inimical to Venus and Mercury, it's the other way round, Venus and Mercury consider moon as their enemy but moon is actually friends with mercury and is neutral towards Venus.

Moon is the only planet that has its mooltrikona in a sign that's not his - cancer, the moon exalts in Taurus. According to mythology, it is said that because he was particularly fond of Rohini who is one of his 27 wives, the 27 nakshatra are all wives of the moon, that's why he has to visit them regularly, and that's why he can't be enemies with them :P

You know I won't say categorically that a planet will give best results when in exalted state and second/third best in mooltrikona/ own sign respectively. When we say generic stuff like that it will most likely bring confusion because we are taking a piece of info in isolation without considering the whole chart.

An exalted planet is strong, that is without doubt, as well as a planet that's located in their mooltrikona sign or in their own signs, but doesn't necessarily HAVE to bring positive results to the person.

If a planet is in the dustana houses, I'd prefer he is in his own sign/mooltrikona house than being in exalted state.

The type of results that a planet will give depend hugely on the degrees at which it is placed. This is called Avastha of planets. There are many other factors that need to be analysed before we correctly assess a planet's strength in a chart. But we are not there yet, for now let's talk about their relationship with each other then we shall talk in the horoscopic term.

In vedic, counting is done by including the first house from which you started counting.

Let's take mooltrikona sign of Moon as an exampl - Taurus, we said that 2nd,4th,5th,8th,9th,and 12th are his friends and 3rd,6th,7th,10th,and 11th are his enemies.

Moons friends are : mercury (2nd),sun(4th),mercury again (5th) which makes mercury a dear friend to the moon, (and according to mythology mercury is the illegitimate son of the moon with the wife of Jupiter).

moon is neutral towards Jupiter ( he rules the 8th and 11th), Jupiter is also exalted in the sign of the moon, cancer. saturn (ruling 9th and 10th), mars (ruling 7th and 12th), venus (ruling 6th and the mooltrikona sign)

This is great stuff!
I still have to absorb it better.

Looked up--
Dustana houses
Avastha

Today I learned more about Vedic Houses (Bhavas).

Similar to western quadruplicities and triplicities.

Lots of information.
I'm going to have to make myself some flash-cards?
At least, maybe create a poster.

Temporary and compound Relationships,

Temporary friendship occur when planets are placed in a specific position from each other it's like you move in to a new environment and you have to play nice with your neighbours whether you like them or not.

So planets that are situated in 2,3,4,10,11,12 become temporary friends. There is mutual temporary enmity if they are posited otherwise.

Compound relationship is the relationship shared by 2 planets following their placement in a chart and their natural affinity towards each other or lack of or neutrality. If 2 planets that are naturally friendly towards each other shared mutual temporary friendship in a char they become extremely friendly. If 2 planets that are friendly on one count but neutral on another, they become friendly, if they are enemies on one count but neutral on another they are enemies, if they are enemies on both counts they become extremely inimical towards each other.

i just cant get my head around moon-venus.. why moon is enemy of venus... maybe nurturing going against being sexy? motherhood kill the lover within?

mercury saturn makes sense... saturn organize thinking and give structure...

mars-sun also makes sense... mars is the engine to go after the solar purpose

saturn-venus, not sure how he can be venus friend, maybe loyalty (sense of responsibility) but not supportive of emotional outlets (moon)

venus-sun, maybe need to please other go against our life purpose. we may focus too much on what others want rather than ourselves. that support the friendship mars-sun

sun-moon solar purpose is understood as a need. the person feel what they need to achieve the solar purpose is felt. lack of aspect may feel as a disconection from what makes us unique and the mark we need to imprint in the world with this incarnation

saturn-sun... he restrict the solar purpose. i think faith (jupiter) courage and going for it (mars) and feeling the urge (moon) are helper to the sun. anything that limit that mission is enemy. saturn think that physical structures cannot be overcome. it is already difficult to find your soul mission, immagine you have to start thinking in all the obstacles rather than having faith without having the map. saturn is just a brake.

saturn-mars... a brake to going after what you want...

would like to hear the phylosophy behind the enemities and friendship...

the explanation is geometry. i am not going to argue with that as I am aware the power of geometry. i just wish there were other explanation available. for why these planets rule or are happy in these houses... sometimes my frustration with traditional and with vedic is not that they do not work, it is the fact i do not get how the meaming of a particular planet gets annulled when we think in these planets rulership or houses they are happy... i know i have not invested in stuying in depth, so not questioning the astrology, just the lack of thorough narrative that i need to grasp concepts....

to give an example... i do not like to hear 6 house means slaves, pets, illness... or so on... i wish a laaaaarge explanation of why these 3 things can be linked in the same house at all and what is the reason behind than.. why not otherway...

sorry for the detour.....

okay if you have moon in the 2nd house and say your asc is pisces, the planets in houses 3,4,5,11,12 and in the lagna are temporary friends of the moon. If these planets are mutually friendly they become extremely friendly, if they are enemies they are extremely inimical towards each other and if they are on one count friends and on the other enemies then they are neutral.

Moon can turn into a malefic in a chart.

Lets keep an open mind this is the general natural relationship of planets.

Compatibility doesnt work the same way as western. Comparing vedic to western astrology will only create more confusion.
