I've a Taurus Ascendant. Natural benefics like Jupiter/Moon are my functional malefics, yet natural malefic like Saturn becomes my functional benefic... but Saturn is STILL a malefic no matter what so it will still bring all the negative things Saturn brings. Mars (my DSC lord) is a malefic as well. Similarly, my lagna lord (Venus) is also a functional malefic even though Venus has Malavya Yoga in my chart.

So wtf, I don't have a single, nice planet to depend on? When their dashas come should I be afraid or not?

Saturn is your yogakaraka, meaning your Shani subperiods are going to be more supportive than the rest-of-us-without-such-lordship, granted dependent on strength/character in your chart for its full effect.

“Functional Benefic” Saturn, representative of 9/10 House matters for Taurus native.

Function is a matter of house-rulership. Mars is a “functional malefic” because it rules a dusthana (7/12) house.

Analyzing placement (house/sign) to tell the planet’s strength and weakness in such cases.

Technically, a Lagna Lord can never “function as malefic” even if it also owns bad houses because the 1H is still 1/3 of mooltrikona, so your Venus is very fine.

In a way, think I’d rather have natural benefics ruling bad houses in my chart with the malefics helping me out lol. Saturn is your buddy, believe it or not—some say this is lucky. I’m Gemini Ascendant, so Saturn rules my 9th like you, but also my 8th...

With that said, here’s an example of a natural malefic at work, in my own chart:

Saturn rules my 8/9 and is my Atmakaraka (soul planet) strongly placed in Capricorn, my 8th House. During Rahu-Saturn dasha also my Sade Sati, lifechanging brutalization by ex-fiancé’s betrayal, a simultaneous gain of 8H authority/knowledge. On ex’s side at that time, his Antardasha had changed to Rahu-Venus two months before (notoriously a period for extramarital relationship) his Venus already debilitated in Virgo, so, the subperiod initiates the planet to behave as told by the karma. In his case, chase after (Rahu) [debilitating] Venus: women,sex,materialism; ruler of his 2/9H (functioning as benefic) placed in 1H; [insecure, weak sense of] Status and/or Dharma that influences his Self. 👍🏽 Nicely planned, Universe—touché.

Strength of planet is akin to wisdom of planet imo, over lifetimes that is. From what I’ve observed first hand, I’d pay most attention to dasha periods of weak planets irregardless of function. “The classical texts/commentaries are in agreement that the debilitated planets result in losses, delays, miseries, etc. on the native.” http://jyotishremedies.com/basic/b03.htm

p.s. please don’t quote
glad to see you’re also studying vedic astrology!! hope my own examples can help you better gauge potential functions and their dasha. at the very least, trace backwards

Mutable Ascendants, we have no yogakaraka... and to boot, instead we get a major ruler known as “kendradhipatidosha” basically too-much-of-a-good-thing-is-bad planet. So Jupiter, the ruler of my 7/10, rather than being a natural/functional benefic of two kendra, becomes malefic just because. ⁉️😑 And he’s retrograde, more powerful. Still trying to make sense of this as the next Mahadasha after Rahu... so can totally relate to the WTF feeling of some Jyotish prescriptions.

What Dasha are you currently running and where is the lord placed?

Wow, thanks for the sharing, vansio! I'm getting more intrigued by Vedic as I studied it more.

KRS said Gemini ASC literally has no functional malefic planets... isn't that a good thing? I'm envious.

quote:
Technically, a Lagna Lord can never “function as malefic”

Yes, I read this, thus I'm confused because I also read that during the dasha of 6H Lord marriage cannot happen and my Venus Antardasha is coming up in 2021-22. 😕 On the other hand, since Saturn is functional benefic, is it a good thing for it to aspect 7H or 7L?

I had my Venus Mahadasha from 12-32yo. I had 2 serious relationships but they both turned out to be a complete waste of time. The 1st relationship was especially bad. I was struggling financially because I was working & studying at the same time but I was slowly moving up the corporate ladder so that was good as I was gaining something in return. But overall I don't remember Venus Mahadasha as being as wonderful as I would like. Is it because Venus is afflicted by Mars from 10H?

During my Sun Mahadasha, my career soared and I was doing well financially, also going around the world for holidays so I was practically worry-free... but love life was dry like a desert. I had suitors but I was not interested in any of them. Strange because Sun is my Darakaraka so I thought I would've met someone...

I'll never get Saturn Mahadasha cos' I'll be dead by then, lol. My significant relationships seemed to start at Saturn Antardasha though. I met my ex when I was running Venus-Saturn and my current guy when I was running Moon-Saturn.

Now I'm in Moon-Mercury (Moon in Scorpio 7H with Rahu but not conjunct (18° orb). It receives NeechBhangaRajYoga and aspect by Jupiter/Venus but since Jupiter is functional malefic I don't know if that's good/bad; Mercury in Aries 12H with Sun but not conjunct (12° orb)). I'll soon enter Ketu Antardasha followed by Venus Antardasha next year.

I'm sorry you went through such a difficult time during your Sade Sati. Since Saturn rules your 9H too it should have brought something good too?

My Sade Sati ended in Jan/Feb this year (without me knowing!) and it has been a challenging period for me although I wouldn't say it was all bad. Lots of emotional ups & downs though when Sade Sati was in its 3rd phase - heartbreak, betrayal by friends, skin issue, loss of income...all in phase 3! Scorpio is tough especially before Saturn Return. After 32yo my career became better and better but I threw it away and now I feel that I've nothing left...not sure if I did the right thing back then but a Vedic Astrologer told me I made the right decision because I'll be happier doing my own biz.

Btw, is it strange to meet someone special during Sade Sati, i.e. is it a good thing or a bad omen?

quote:
instead we get a major ruler known as “kendradhipatidosha”

I just read about this but am still confused...like WHY? KRS says it depends on the strength of your Jupiter (sign/house/aspects) so it may not be all bad.

Which means my Moon-Venus dasha should bestow good results?

2. During the main period of a FM the sub period of a strong FB will bestow good results.

How about Rahu & Ketu dashas - are they always bad? I know Rahu dasha can bring marriages or one might become obsessed with a particular pursuit depending where your Rahu is placed, but what about Ketu(?) because this planet seems "separative" in nature.

Thanks for sharing this. I've a much better understanding now. He has another good video explaining this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9cf8lrBM-Q

KRS tries not to be fatalistic but he makes things very easy to understand.

I don't quite understand the table. Mars is my 7th and 12th Lord and it says "Loss of spouse, separation etc" so this is the destiny of all Taurus lagna? How can it be?

Consistent with the Topic of your thread,
I found there's another way to measure which are the more-beneficial or more-blocking energies in your chart, using placements of The Nakshatras of the Moon.

Navatara and Nadis (pulse of the nakshatras)
I'm not finished the whole study yet.
Needed time to let what I learned sink in.

So, I got a rare chunk-of-hours a few days ago. Chose a video topic that youtube placed in front of my face. Got my notepaper out, prepared for a session of learning! yay

I created a handwritten Table
(like the one I saw on the vid).
. .
If you are adept at using MS Excel Spreadsheets,
then, more-power-to-you!
I think that 'MS Word has a Table format creator under one of their tabs.
{I'll try creating the table with that for myself, later.}

What I did--- handwritten style
First (on the bottom half of the page)
.. I listed all 27 Nakshatras, with their #'number' as they appear in order from 1 to 27.
{See '#27 Nakshatra List', below}

NOTE:
Rows are arranged horizontally,
.. from left to right on the paper.
Columns are arranged vertically,
.. from top to bottom of your paper.

Make List of the nakshatras:
grouping 1-10 ;
10-18 ;
19-27 .

Then (3) Columns of each 3 numbers {to be insert into the table, are below}. Relates to the 3 Cycles in your life.
Cycle 1 Childhood ~0-36.
Cycle 2 Middle age 36-72.
Cycle 3 Old age 72-108.
{ I need to understand this better..}
.. skip ..

*~

So,
Seems that the nakshatras (in Navatara) appear in their listing as clumps-of-3 each. The order used is contiguous.
After 3 nakshatras spanning degrees,
the 'Type' of nakshatra changes to the next 3, using the #27List.

{Bored?? Confused?? LOL.
Might be 'me'.. but really, you might have to try 'doing' it to understand.}
When I find the video again, I'll post it.
Picture worth 1,000 Words!

Plus, there are "9 types"
of
3 nakshatras per row
{when you get this all done on the paper}.
You'll note the numerical patterns, in how the table numbers are weaved.

After you make the generic table
it appears as an almost-blank form, with headings.

The generic form can be used later
(to copy as blanks)
to fill-in and make Tables for your friends.

Purpose:
Will be good for use observing the effects of "Transits",
or
use it to compare chart-tables with someone else to determine Synastry.

The number headings are (will become) filled-in with "the placement OF your Moon Nakshatra,
followed by subsequent nakshatra on the list that next follows the placement of your Moon's nakshatra.

{For shortcut thinking,
I see these as 27 houses to count from your Moon. But they are NOT houses, but groupings-of-degrees {nakshatras}. )

e.g.
1. = the 1st nakshatra.. IS Your Moon Nakshatra--
all the other numbers are filled-in and counted from your Moon as 1.; always the first placement.
..
2. = 2nd nakshakra that appears (in #List order) after number of your Moon's nakshatra.
{You'll be looking at the number of the nakshatra, from the list of 27, below.}
..
3. = the 3rd nakshatra (from position of your Moon's nakshatra) on the list of #27.
etc.

*~
Names of the 9 types of Nakshatras {Navatara}
ie. {groupings/collections} of Nakshatras.
(Is the same for everyone.)

eg 1st nakshatra {= your birth Moon},
.. is called 1) Janma.
eg 2nd nakshatra (from the 1st}
.. is called 2) Sampat..

9 Nakshatra Types
(with their characteristic meaning, or effect))
1) Janma (Birth) = Strong Foundation; your birth nak
2) Sampat (Prosperity) = the nak that 'Holds power for'
3) Vipat (Threat) = nak that may cause troubles, delays
4) Kshema (Success & Growth) = strength you possess from family lineage, loyalty from
5) Prayatak (Obstacles) = nak that may be prone towards creating obstacles for you
6) Sadhana (Achievements) = nak granting you rewards and results
7) Naidhana (Destruction) = promotes miseries & obstacles
8) Mitra (Friend) = 'to help'; related with mother, emotional; money help
9) Parammitra {Devoted Friend} = acts as the staunch supporter of your soul in life; the nak that comes with 'shovel-ready bury-the-body' type of assisting energies.

*~

List of #27 Nakshatras
'numbered' in order of appearance
1. Ashwini
2. Bharani
3. Kritika
4. Rohini
5. Mrigashira
6. Ardra
7. Punarvasu
8. Pushya
9. Ashlesha

10. Magha
11. Purva Phalguni
12. Uttara Phalguni
13. Hasta
14. Chitra
15. Swati
16. Vishakha
17. Anuradha
18. Jyeshtha

19. Mula
20. Purva Ashadha
21. Uttara Ashadha
22. Svravana
23. Dhanishta
24. Shatabhisha
25. Purva Bhadrapuda
26. Uttara Bhadrapada
27. Revati

*~

To Create the Generic Form of
The Navatara TABLE

write/type
"The Nine Nakshatra Types"
. .
Rows - Types 1 through 9 will contain the names of the 9 Nakshatra types.
Include descriptive keywords (parentheses) to jog memory of their effects.

write/type
After writing in the Nak-Type,
Make 3 more columns with @ 1-inch _____________ blank ;
between each cycle number.
{to fill with name of nak later}--
... (across the paper, in a line) ...

1) Janma (Birth) {cycle number} -- 1 ; 10 ; 19 ;
2) Sampat -- 2 - 11 - 20
3) Vipat -- 3 - 12 - 21
4) Kshema -- 4 - 13 - 22
5) Prayatak -- 5 - 14 - 23
6) Sadhana -- 6 - 15 - 24
7) Naidhana -- 7 - 16 - 25
8) Mitra -- 8 - 17 - 26
9) Param mitra -- 9 _____ ; 18 _____ ; 27 _____ ;

NOTE that the _______________ {blanks}
after the cycle number will be the place you write-in the name of the nakshatra (FOR that cycle position).

Small example from work on my chart.
My Moon Nakshatra -- [from #27-List = #12}
is Uttara Phalguni

TABLE
1) Janman (birth) ..
1. Uttara Phalguni; 10. Hasta; 19 Chitra.

.. {note: on #nakList 'Chitra' is #14,
for inclusion after/as cycle-number 19}
The cycle-number 19, is the 19th nak from birth nak.

2) Sampat (prosperity) ..
2. Swati; 11. Vishakha; 20. Anuradha

surprise double-post

_____________
Add -- I'll use this space to leave people a List of Nakshatras, showing the Vedic Sign Degrees with the Western Sign Degrees next to it.

I'm still in cross-over zone between knowing the Western and associating which Nakshatras span what sidereal degrees/signs in the Vedic.

Some have been easier than others.

Transit by which planet specifically? because a lot of times you see good and bad transits coming together.

My Moon is Jyestha so that’s my first nakshatra. My Venus is Mrigashira so it’s the 6th Nakshatra Type in my case, right?

Tr Ketu was right on top of my Venus when I started on a new investment and it has been making money so that’s spot on.

Tr Venus is on my Ketu (4th type) now with tr Sun on my Mercury (3rd type). Tr Mars coming up to my Saturn (8th type). Not sure how I feel about these yet.

Btw what does Vedic say about nodal return and Jupiter Return?
