I wasn't familiar with this,
so it was fun to dig in and learn something new.
KRS has a video explanation of the system.
Lots of graphics to show how and 'why' the system works. The vid gets better, and his voice modulates to make clearer meanings, after soundmark 6:00.

These are my VERY loose notes... first time hearing it. I may be in error in my understanding (I hope not). If I listen to it (or someone else's vid) later, I will come back to this post to clarify, or expand these notes.
NOTE: IF YOU notice that I've made ANY ERORS in ANY posting I do,
PLEASE tell me -- I don't mind being corrected. Am here to LEARN to do it correctly, and with accuracy! When I am able to nail down this knowledge, then I can help others understand things more clearly too.
*~
There are various calculation systems created by different Vedic teachers.
K.P. = Krishnamurthi Paddhati system
Says that KP makes understanding the differences better. How a planet in a sign can get effects different than the sign it's in. .. More simplified.
Has to do with the Houses the planets occupy.
(Is more like Placidus houses in the western system.)
* Each Zodiac Sign House is 30 regular degrees.
* Each YEAR varies in length.
We think of a year as being 365 days; but actually it's longer by a 'little more' than 365. Each year that 'little-more time' can vary in length, plus or minus.
There's a 'catch-up' adjustment that must be made to adjust it-- hence, "leap years" etc.
So the 30 degree zodiac sign actually differs in lengths.
A planet in a degree might 'behave' a certain way except for those time periods where the extended-degrees overlap into the next or previous zodiac sign house.
Aries zodiac sign is 30 degrees.
The zodiac can 'actually' measure (example) as 34.5 degrees. This would have the planet (e.g.) in Aries, but 'behaving' like Taurus at times.
30 degrees ->
are divided into 2 1/2 parts.
Those parts are the 2 to 3 'nakshatras' belonging to each of the signs.
Each Nakshatras is further broken apart into 9 separate sections.
Nakshatra's sub Lord --
The planet can have "the effect of" the house it may overlap with.
KRS goes into an example of a person with Sun debilitated in Aries. And yes, the relationship with the Father was really bad.
. .
However! during some mahadashas his Sun would took on the effects and qualities of (Taurus?) during those years. This brought him money, land, and other material gains during those times-- when ordinarily the Sun otherwise would not have 'produced' for him at all.
I hope that if you listen carefully to KRS' video (and look at the graphics he presents) that your question may be more easily answered? ..
