This may be a dumb question. But, do you have a portfolio or websites you have designed? Maybe if you could show them examples of your work you'd get further with them.

Sending you lots o' lucky green job getting light

jjjax, I can't say that I've ever found a decent job via ads. They've all come by word of mouth. I tell everybody I know, plus phone up a few I haven't seen in awhile, that I am looking for work. I tell strangers, I tell friends' parents and families, I call up my old professors (well, those with whom I had a good relationship, with whom I keep intouch) and sometimes former employers. Now before I sound like some sort of maniacal bulldozer to you, do know that I certainly don't do this systematically!! Lots of it just happens! And I certainly ask them about _themselves_ too! LOL!

Also, if I lack practical experience or have no established reputation in an industry/area, I ask friends who know people working in the field if I could meet that person to ask a few questions. More often than not, you make a friend, and friends are the ones who call you up or email to tell you about a job.

So my advice is person-to-person contact. At best, you find a great job; at worst, you meet a lot of interesting and great people, and gain some great chats and make friends!

Schmoozing can be fun for all, you know. People _like_ to get work for good people, once they know them.

cheers,
Lunargirl

Last thing...

...whether non-profit or not, organizations love it when you come in and ask them what do THEY need.

As in, calling up a great graphic design place and saying, "I wonder if you have an abundance of work because I'm looking for a part-time apprenticeship in your field. Would you be interested, or can oyu suggest another firm that needs an apprentice right now?"

cheers,
Lunargirl

Thanx Lunargirl! Yeah contacts are important in my industry and i deffinately dont have many of them! I made a heap through my industry placement with a magazine company but they have closed down (nothing to do with me working there i swear! hehe) and now i dont know where all the people i have met have gone too... damit!

Schmoozing... hmmmn... i dont know if im that good at it!??? But i will try

If anyone is interested... i have been searching and writing, calling to no avail... and then something just feel into my lap! its not what im after, but its something. Good experiance, contacts...! A guy my Dad knows from Tennis just came up and asked him if he new whether i would be interested in assisting photography work cause he new what i was doing at uni. so.... I might have a job assisting sports photographers at games on weekends. Its a shame that football guys arent really my type! I have a meeting about it Tuesday but i think they will take me on! yay! I wanted to go more towards graphic design... but apparently a lot of the photographers that do this on weekends have other jobs... like graphic design during the week. Might be perfect for Schmoozing Lunargirl!!!?

Thanx again...

There's a book called "How To Become A Rainmaker" by Jeffrey J. Fox. It's actually a book on how to be a Salesperson, but I think it's very applicable for job-hunting as well.

Yeah, I'm job-hunting, too ... yet, I've not been at it for nearly as long.

I'll highlight two thing from the book.

When you go to an interview, remember that you really are only selling two things (neither of which is yourself ... not yet). You are selling your ability to make your prospective employer's job more comfortable and easier. And you are going to make him or her a bucket of money. Comfort and money. Comfort and money. Comfort and money. Show your interviewer how you provide both of these things.

Sometimes, I lack discipline, but there's a handy point system in the book which I will paraphrase from "selling" to "job-hunting."

There are four steps to getting a job:

1. Getting a lead, a referral, an introduction to a prospective employee; You probably get lots of these in the want ads. Send out the resumes!

2. Getting an appointment to meet she or he who does the hiring.

3. Meeting said hiring person face to face.

4. Close the deal and get hired.

For step 1, give yourself one point. For step two, give yourself two points. Then three. Then four for step 4 (say that four times fast). Obviously, you want to get the job, so 4 points is your magic number. Commit to getting four points Every Day!!!

The number druids agree with me that this is a good way to discipline mysElf since the number four resonates to the very idea of learned discipline!

Good Luck!

OmmMMMmmmMmmmmmm...

<chant degenerates into hacking couch from all the fruity incense clogging the air>

jjjax, Swami Lunargirl foresees MANY SCHMOOZING OPPORTUNITIES!!

Swami Lunargirl also insists jjjax paste Grasshopper's mantra to her forehead: COMFORT AND MONEY.

<now if THAT doesn't make all your priorities clear to all those males you'll be meeting, nothing will!!>

OmmMMMmmmMmmmmmm...

And do shut that tent flap on the way out, dearie.

Grasshopper, thanks, your advice is really great! Hehe Lunnar girl: you make me laugh. Randall... update is:

Well i got it!!! But its not big boy footballers, its little boy footballers, team shots, individual photos stuff like that, might be assisting with photographers at preschools and dance schools too... Only saturday work at this stage, sh*tty pay rate, but hey something might come out of it, and im looking forward to learning and meeting new people.

I have also been bombarding places with my CV via email (i have sent my stuff to over 200 places)... graphic design mobs, if i could just pick up some casual or part time work at the very least at a graphic design place with this photography assistant job i would be soooo happy!!! So far no interviews, but i have a few replies... most saying they dont have positions at present, but have been told my letter of introduction and CV are impressive, and some places said they will keep my CV on file in case something comes up... and one place wants me to send a CD with my work on it! ah! I hope i will eventually pick up something.

... Just have to try and stay positive and motivated. This wonderful place really helps me do that! But i might not be visiting quite as much as i would like because i have to give finding a job my all. Thank you all again!!!

I did not have a chance to read all your replies to see the advice that you have received, nor to see if your status has changed, however, I say that I happen to agree w/ Lunargirl. In the sence that it's not what you know, but who you know. Plus, if you really are doing all tht you can, and nothing is coming to you, maybe you have something better waiting for you and you have to let it come to you and stop searching so hard. Sometimes when I try too hard, it doesn't fall in my lap until I let things start happening for me. If your Karma isn't out of balance, good things will happen to those who wait. Much luck w/ your job search. Just have faith, and I truly believe things will eventualy work out for you.
