Hello all... forgive my absence. I have been here, I just haven't said much. I have some sad news... the wonderful independent bookstore I work for and have worked for for the past two and a half years, Canterbury Booksellers (www.madisoncanterbury.com) is going out of business. i LOVE this bookstore. It's been my second home, my second family. I'm scared about finding a new job.... I'm very sad. Guess I'm going through the mourning period. How do you cope with losing a job you love? OMG!!!!Canterbury's is closing!?!? I am horrified......and sooooo sad. I love that place...spent so much time there when I was going to UW-M. I am sorry LMB. What a bummer. Hopefully, you will find another job just as wonderful. PS How is the economy in Madtown? I am thinking of re-locating back there.... MK IP: Logged |

Economy seems to be fairly strong, but there seems to be a lot of regulation.....that's what my boyfriend says, who has a real job. And yes, Canterbury is closing. I'm just so sad. It was hard to go to work yesterday and facing the people who came up to me and said "Oh I'm so sorry....I'll really miss this place..." I likened it to feeling that knife twist in my gut like when someone says "I'm sorry your mother died" over and over. Okay... I'm dramatic...but I'm really sad about it. I know it's "time" for me to move on... I just don't know what to do. I'm applying to the feminist bookstore, "A Room of One's Own" -- the closest thing to Canterbury, but not it by far. I don't know if I want another bookstore job...I want something more stimulating....but at the same time, I'll be teaching, going to grad school, interning at the University of Wisconsin Press (if the guy ever gets back to me) so maybe I'll have enough stimulation. We'll see. I say definitely move back to Madison. I just love it here. Where are you now? All my best, LMB IP: Logged |

Thanks, you guys. I knew in my heart it was time to leave... I just didn't know it would be so suddenly. The way the customers are saying they're so sorry, etc., it feels like Canterbury has come down with some terminal illness and now we employees are having to sit with it and watch it die. My am I morbid today. On the up-side, I met with the person from the University of Wisconsin Press today and my internship starts on Thursday. That should be fulfilling and exciting. A new way into the book world. Thanks to all, LMB IP: Logged |

Hi all. Well, the internship is a mix of grunt work and interesting work and I like it. It will be a good fit and, I hope, a future potential real bonafide job. As far as looking for part-time work, I might go back to child care. there's a family of three girls who needs a nanny/babysitter. The mother's a book editor! How great is that? So we're emailing back and forth. Waiting to hear back from her.... thanks for caring, LMB IP: Logged |

Hey Randall, Always leave it to you to make someone feel cared for. Thank you for that. Well, that particular family didn't work out. I found another family, but it just wasn't enough hours. So after much hair-pulling deliberation, I've decided to hold off for an office job. Simple, easy. I just don't know. I'm very confused right now. My part-time job *shouldn't* be my main focus; I'm teaching, going to classes, interning, writing... but I have to be engaged at whatever job I'm at, all the same. Watching Canterbury go under is just awful. The shelves are being emptied out... painful. Thank you for asking, my friend. LMB IP: Logged |

Oh all IS WELL!!!!!!!! I got the BEST news today. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. You see, Canterbury Books has a fabulous, themed Inn upstairs and the asst. manager was complaining how understaffed they are and I said Oooh! Oooh! me! me! and voila! I was hired. so I'll be able to stay in the "Canterbury family", I love the idea of taking care of people and making sure they're comfortable. I'll have an excellent manager who I already have good relations with and everything! I'm so happy I could burst. A funny thing - just this morning, while I was at the front desk reading, I was writing in my "Your Heart's Desire" book by Sonia Choquette - and it's all about ORDAINING what you want...and I wrote out exactly what I wanted...and I swear to you, no more than two hours later, I GOT IT!!! Oh, my lovely knowflakes, ordain! It works! LMB IP: Logged |

Motherkonfessor -- I understand the need to get to Madison. It has its own little problems, but for the most part it is such a desirable place to live. If ever you visit, we must meet and talk Linda things! Best, LMB IP: Logged |

Randall - oh yes!! I think I've been so blind in the past, not realizing when the Uni-verse has given me such gifts... and this one was so blatant! It was like: "Hey, LMB, LISTEN!!!" Thanks for all your support, always. LMB IP: Logged |

New job is going well. Unfortunately, Saturdays I'm on housekeeping duty and yesterday I pulled something in my back while I was scrubbing down one of the whirlpools and my back and head are just pounding. I miss the people contact I had with the bookstore job, but making sure people have an exceptionally pleasant stay is fulfilling to me. Thanks for keeping involved in my life! Love LMB IP: Logged |
