First of all, what is the connection with this thesis information and these workers? Is it part of their job responsibilities to actually help individuals in this way? Do they usually do this or is it a special reason they are helping you out? I ask this because if they are making time out of their usual work load they may be unhappy having to do this work for you.You will need to address this if it is an issue.

How have you addressed the situation in which the workers were supposedly collecting this information? Perhaps you could pull them aside and say something like -- I would like to speak to you about the research that you were doing for me. I'm concerned about your sources and where you have found this information. This is my thesis and it is extremely important to me. I've reviewed the information you provided and at first glance, I have found it to be unusable. I really want to make certain that we are fully understanding what I need. I would like to clarify that we are working on the same goal. You will need to determine whether this was an error of misunderstanding of what you wanted or whether they intentionally did bad work. If it was a misunderstanding perhaps you can then get them onto a better track. If they intentionally did bad work and made it up. Compassionately ask the person why they did this - don't get angry or raise your voice, (be sure to first come from the position that there was a misunderstanding.)If this intentional shotty work, tell them how this will affect you and how you are now in a difficult position since two months of work is lost. Ask them if this situation can be fixed and how.
Once you have exhausted all your options dealing with the persons, then you must decide whether you need to go to a superior to handle the situation. But I would first try getting them to help you again if you are confident after speaking with them.

Do not feel guilty if they are dismissed. They knew what they were supposed to do.
