Hi Guys,

So here's my tricky situation... I've been at my retail job for over two years now. It has its upside and downside. The good: it allows great flexibility for my education. I have my scheduled days off as I need them, and lots of on the job freedom. It also pays pretty good, with the likely posibility of a fashion buyer career if I decide that to eb my major (its one of my considerations, still iffy). the bad: lots of horrid customers using use as their verbal punchign bag, and lots and lots of gossip and drama.

So now I've been hired as a "subsitute" tutor at the local Elementry School. The job is interesting, as I've always loved beign aroudn kids and social work/counseling are my other major career choices. Today was my first day, and I loved it. Quite different from the loudness and hustle of my retail job. Now the catch is, I applied thinking "subsitute" would be an occasional need thing. I reasoned I would only be called in to work once in awhile, and keep my current job and my current college courses. Well, they dropped the bomb that they want me going in EVERY day for a long time until they hire someone. Now, this would be fine if I knew I had the chance of being hired on, and hten I would easily just quit my job. They didn't give me any information as to wheter this is a possibility or not, and I just can't go quitting my job on the hope that they will hire me on. I also know I can't keep doing this two job thing, for say mre than the rest of the week... I'm already seriously burned out... I'm afraid if I tell them I can't do it after all, I'll completly ruin my chances of ever being considered for a permanent position but I can't work 16 hour days... and go to school....

Hello Planet Soul,

don't know if my comments are going to be helpful but I'll try.
I think that's great you have a job in retail and being paid well and you have the flexibility to do what you need to do like getting your degree while working.
I applaud you!
That can be very hard juggling so much at once.
I applaud you also for becoming a teacher. It's such an important job. I'm also in school trying to get my teaching degree while at the same time taking care of my little one at home.
I think teaching can be a much more gratifying job in some respects. Especially if you know you're making a difference in a child's life, you know?
I'm sorry I'm probably not helping by saying that but maybe just maybe since your retail job is so flexible maybe you can take a leave of absence from your retail job and stay at the teaching job just until they find another teacher? I'm sure your retail job would accomodate you for the time being? Especially if your an invaluable worker and you sound like one!
It wouldn't hurt to ask them, right?
Good luck in your decision Planet Soul.
I know it will all work out!

first , u should leave the teaching job .
b'coz what i can make out of the situation , is that u need constant money for your survival and studies . keeping that in mind , u better stuck with the first job .

otther point that needs consideration is what are your career goals ,getting into that field would help , at this stage .

Thanks for the adivce guys (: I spoke to some of the bosses at the school about the situation, and they really understood. They really like my work, and don't want me to leave. They are going to speak to the district leader, and see what can be done. I really love the school, and don't mind being a temp, as long as they do hire me on further down the road.

The kids are exhausting, but yes very rewarding. I have two very special children that I'm working with. One is a blind little girl, and the little boy has Down's. They are so affectionate and GREAT kids. Being able to help them is such an awesome experience. (: I think I'd even do it for free, if I could (:

I'm considering the leave of abscence, but I'm not sure how that will go. The company is usually pretty flexible, but right now we're just starting with our Christmas Season merchandise (it starts early for us). I'm in charge of the cosmetics department, which plays a major role during the Holiday's. However, it doesn't hurt to ask so I'm going to see what they say. I love the flexibility, and most of all I'm very close to a couple of people I work with. For now, I'm going to try to get that loa and just stick out both jobs. Its tiring, but I'm a figther I'll do my best to hang in there. The good thing is, school lets out for Xmas so just two months to go (:

You are so lucky. Working with children is my dream job.

I have so much patience only when it comes to animals and kids.

Here's an update (: The District has offered me a perm. position. I now have a big pay increase, a dollar and then some over what I earn in the Retail position I've had for nearly 3 years. I will be able to comfortably quit the Retail job, hooray! I was going to quit ASAP, but decided to be gracious and stay and help with the Holiday SHopping Frenzy. I will be holding down both positions for the next two weeks, until school is in recess. Whew, I am also in the middle of finals-but it is so worth it.
I was moved to the Middle School, which was a little sad. I miss my Second Graders, but these kids are really awesome and a tad bit more humorous. I am teaching the kids, and learnign from them too. Its weird how I had forgetten so much of the grammar and math rules, now as I teach the kids I relearn the concepts. My biggest pride is when I see their little faces light up, the moment when they "get" it. Especially my English learners (: I have a little girl from Yemen and boy is she smart, she is catching on really well (: My biggest weakness is the discipline. It does not come easy to me to have to be strict w the kids during yard duty. I have Mars at the end of the 12th, and I'm feeling it. I have never been very assertive, more of go between. Now I am in a position of having to enforce rules on a daily basis, a real challenge for my timid self (:
