Hi MiaMammy08 and mrsxdwinchester,You ask very good questions. From my own personal experience, I had applied for California state grants that paid for my community college classes. I lived at home with my family when I was taking community college classes in the summer.
When I was at the University about 45 minutes away, I lived in the dormitory for the 1st year, and then in an apartment with roommates the 2nd year. I then decided to live at home with family again for years 3 & 4.
I had always taken public transit . . . The University had its own bus system free for students. My mom would also drive me to the local University hospital, which had a shuttle service to the campus.
I was frustrated not having the independence of a car at the time. But I am still glad I went with the decision of not wanting to be burdened with an auto loan and a large responsibility.
I lived with roommates obviously to save on costs. My college budget was VERY tight.
The financing part involved a majority of government and university grants (these are funds that you do not need to pay back) and the rest on low interest government student loans. The FAFSA form is extremely important; make sure it is filled out correctly and submitted on time.
Regards,
Aphrodite
