I wanted to know how does one afford to go to a community college and pay for a car along with a apartment/house/townhouse or whatever? I am considering doing it all on my own and need advice.

I'm also trying to figure this out! Only I'm 16, and I know for at least another year I'm stuck in the City I'm in. I have to go to City college over the Summer to complete a class to meet the requirements for State in the Fall.
As of right now I'm filtering through the pile of papers my guidance counselors given me, seeing which grants I qualify for. Then there are different programs depending on your family's income and such. I think that's about everything you can do, other than student loans. If anyone has any other ideas I'd love to know.

Hi MiaMammy08 and mrsxdwinchester,

You ask very good questions. From my own personal experience, I had applied for California state grants that paid for my community college classes. I lived at home with my family when I was taking community college classes in the summer.

When I was at the University about 45 minutes away, I lived in the dormitory for the 1st year, and then in an apartment with roommates the 2nd year. I then decided to live at home with family again for years 3 & 4.

I had always taken public transit . . . The University had its own bus system free for students. My mom would also drive me to the local University hospital, which had a shuttle service to the campus.

I was frustrated not having the independence of a car at the time. But I am still glad I went with the decision of not wanting to be burdened with an auto loan and a large responsibility.

I lived with roommates obviously to save on costs. My college budget was VERY tight.

The financing part involved a majority of government and university grants (these are funds that you do not need to pay back) and the rest on low interest government student loans. The FAFSA form is extremely important; make sure it is filled out correctly and submitted on time.

Regards,

Aphrodite
