Just wanted to say "we've come a long way, baby" as it was common in the early 1900's for a midwife in the North Georgia mountains to carry a hammer in her bag, in case she had to strike and break the pelvis to perform a difficult delivery.

why on earth would you break the pelvis to perform a c-section? it is usually done with a KNIFE!!??

one drawback of BC in the summer is that any man in the territory can be scooped up and drafted into the firefighting brigade...forest fires a major occurrence in them thar woods...but it is sensational.

Yes and no. Imagine how far we could have come in 110 years if we stayed on the right path. In many ways, we've gone backwards. But I don't believe everything I read about Midwives back then because there was a concerted campaign in this country to slander Midwives and midwifery.

I never heard that about BC.
I've heard there are a lot of junkies.
I wonder if any of them get scooped up.

You are right Kat, I edited the above from c-section to delivery. I went to a theater production called Headwaters: Birth, Death & Places in Between last year. Many amazing true midwife stories from back in the day were told. I myself had to have an emergency c-section with my first born. The doctor's assistant accidentally fractured my ribs during my second born's c-section.

I believe in doing my research, knowing my options, & being well prepared and then ultimately, graciously accepting whatever the outcome.

was yours a real emergency? mine was more about an overcrowded labour ward and a monitor no one could trust, i was ****** off for a long time about that little robbery...they TOLD me it was an emergency but my drug of choice [in case of the need for drugs i chose ahead of time to BE AWAKE whatever happened] was an epidural and those do not take effect very quickly, so i knew they were telling little whites from that point on. the midwife at my daughter's labour confirmed that conclusion...

now speaking of litigation fears that is another area where doctors are frequently blamed for procedures designed to fend of insurance company suits. many excellent doctors are flatly against the way the insurance industry has made their profession a minefield of lawsuits.

Kat, the baby and I went into distress with our heart rates doing the opposite. I couldn't dialate beyond 6 cm and she was large and facing backwards. (drug intervention may have slowed the process) There were a lot of births that day and she had to go to the "special care" nursery since they were out of equipment. I didn't get to see her for 6 hours due to hospital protocol. I was not pleased to say the least with the experience. I'm a freak of nature when it comes to these types of things.

Birth with my first felt much like initiation into something extraordinary. I left my body twice, received orgasmic sensations, and felt so high in consciousness I was above the threshold of pain. It was as though I was looking down at the pain, I could see it as an entire living world that I was able to go in and out of. Sometimes it was hard but that only showed me how to transcend the pain.

I can't wait to do it all over again!!!!!

After 16 hours or labor, 3 hours of pushing and then giving birth to a 9 pound baby with no drugs - in the dark, squatting upright on the floor, with two midwives -

I have to say....

f--- what anyone else thinks!! If I ever have another baby I want DRUGS.

LOL moonwitch you are not alone i have heard many mothers say the same...though my daughter had a similar experience and was very proud of herself for pulling it off with a healthy 9 lb-er ...she is probably not having anymore but she is glad she did it the way she decided!

Kudos and more power to those that continue to do it naturally, of course . I wouldn't put my next birth into the hands of someone else completely but... Natural birth was just personally traumatic for me.

I would have to say I'm ever so grateful after all the stories! OMG!

I like pain- it can morph and be used as it's own drug/power... if that makes sense. Nassim's wife who famously had an orgasmic birth on video said pain morphed into just a 'sensation'... an energy and she translated it as pleasure. Totally cool I totally know what she meant when I gave birth to Tahlea.

I wish I could have had a child with my beloved. But it was not to be.
Betwixt 26+lost pregnancies, some up to 5 months.....
My 13th. was successful and I gave birth to my son (who just turned 29), 7pounds 9ounces, a few weeks early.
Being intersex, not completely female.....things got really weird.
My pelvis is male not female.
So on the way out it could not expand and I broke his little shoulders and collar bones pushing him out.
I did not have a normal labor.
The midwives told us to go to the mall and walk around a bit because it was going to be at least 12 hours before I was in actual labor.
I went to the bathroom and as I lowered myself to sit.......wham! I suddenly had a head dangling out of me!
OK...now that freaking hurt!
I went from 4cm to 10cm in that moment because my partially surgically created vagina (intersex, born internally female/externally male) tore clear through betwixt it and rectal area and part of the cervix also.
Well, 6 minutes later he was born!
I had to have some serious plastic surgery but all in all it was a fantastically wonderful experience and one I would have loved to have again!
In my opinion no meds is the way to go!
I even refused meds except local and laughing gas for the 1hour 45 minutes of plastic reconstructive surgery.
I was so deliriously happy!
Definitely one of the best experiences in my life to date!
