salome was the legendary step daughter of king harod. i don't think her name is mentioned in the bible though.some say she requested the head of john the baptist from harod, others say it was her mother who asked her to do so.... well, i believe none of it; people have demonized women for eons. i think her dance of the seven veils has many mystical and spiritual implications. here's an interesting example ~ quote: To the ancients, The Sun, The Moon and, later, The Planets were the visible symbols of The Divine. As they studied the movements and cycles of each celestial body, they associated these heavenly lights with natural attributes in the world around them. Through the evolution of astrology, magick and philosophy, The Seven Wanderers (The Sun, Moon and the five visible Planets) became the symbols of the most significant powers both in Nature and in The Human Spirit. For the mystic, the Seven Planetary Powers are the steps on the stairway to the highest state of enlightenment. Perceived as seven tiers on the moutain of Heaven, each sphere is associated with a state of enlightened concsiousness. It is known that the Merkabah Mystics (the precursors of the medieval Qabalists) worked with the Planetary Powers. Their techniques involved traveling through each of the "Seven Heavens" in succession and learning about each through direct experience. But of course, the celestial bodies were only the symbols of the successive veils of experience within the mystic's own soul. The Seven Veils of Mystical Experience: Imagination (Dreams) Reason Passion Bliss (Love, Agape) Divine Courage Divine Compassion Divine Knowledge (Gnosis)
