Dated 10/13/2003I would like to see a world governed not by laws, but by cooperation and mutual understanding. A society where people do what is right, not because they are forced to, but because they want to, and because they believe in caring for one another. A world where people greet one another, and listen to one another. A world in which the occasional bad seed cannot prevail, nor do lasting harm.
They would not be able to turn us away from one another, for we would look out for each other, catch each other when we begin to stray, when we begin to fall.
My dreams have seen a world, where I've got your back whether you have mine or not, because it is the right thing to do, not because it is the fair thing to do.
This idea culminates in a world where justice is issued within the confines of the transgressor's heart and his conscience, because that is how he was raised, and that is what his brothers' and sisters' dignity means to him: More than his own ego, wants or needs.
Is such a goal obtainable? Who knows? I believe so. I believe that promoting unity is one key. Avoiding division is another.
So strongly do I believe that we can accomplish this goal, that a lucrative career lies in pieces behind me, the momentum of that career carrying those pieces a bit farther down a path that I no longer follow. Somewhere along the way, I veered from that course.
A turn for the better or for the worse? Some might say that time will tell and that results will reveal the wisdom of my ways.
Whether or not we ever reach that goal, in my heart it is known that the right choice was made. See, a change in just MY way of treating my fellow man frees me from the burden of living with the fact that I didn't AT LEAST do MY part.
My part in what?
In redirecting this tide of indifference, apathy and self-indulgence which has us barreling head down and guard down, toward oblivion.
I WILL do my part, raising children that believe in doing their part as well.
We will add to society more than we take, rather than taking from it more than we need and more than we are willing to give in return.
My children and my sincere efforts.
They are my gift to you, as is the remainder of this incredible miracle that I have been given called life.
These are my gifts to you, my beloved humanity, and to my own personal vision for a unified nation.
Love,
daf
