When the one some call Jesus (not his real name) said one must be born of the living water
to live...it meant in my opinion reincarnation by being born from the living water, the amnionic fluid of physical birth/rebirth. Also becoming as a child. He also spoke of casting off one's old cloak and putting on a new one, giving up one body for a new one. Once we can remember our past self identities, THAT IS IMMORTALITY!
It is the forgetting which causes humans to think they are not immortals.
