A team of scientists from Boston University studied over 1,000 centenarians to develop a system of genetic analysis by which they can predict - with a 77 per cent accuracy rate - whether someone has a strong chance of "exceptional longevity," according to findings published on Thursday in the journal Science. The predictions can be boiled down to the presence of 150 genetic variants, called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which doctors and researchers found to be common among the elderly who live substantially longer than the average population. http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/newshome/7500052/scientists-predict-lifespan/ IP: Logged |

some interesting comments on the possible ramifications down the road with this...bladerunner here we come?but they don't seem to realize that genes are not set in stone anymore than anything else in this universe...as in the ability to alter genetic structure with diet during pregnancy, etc... also the fact that despite inheriting our genes from our parents somehow many of us do not physically follow in their footsteps at all? They're mising an important ingredient--human will.------------------ "I have found a desire within myself that no experience in this world can satisfy; the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world." -C.S. Lewis IP: Logged |

Randall- quote: They're mising an important ingredient--human will.
I've known a few elderly people in and out of my family who just plain want to die. Not that they are suicidal. Just that they have become so old and frail and are tired of each day being such a struggle. Yet their bodies seem healthy. You can see it in their eyes. They are just tired of the daily grind. I think there would be a certain point when I'd say enough is enough. Being diabetic sucks enough on it's own. I can't imagine having other ailments that come with aging. IP: Logged |

Yes. WinkAway, no matter what they say. Life is a struggle, even without the ailments. I find it helpful to approach survival as a fighter. Boxers, etc. get a lot of pain, but they always want to carry on.IP: Logged |

Your reply implies that fear is what motivates the fighter, but if he was in a state of fear he would certainly lose the fight. There must be a more complex explanation.IP: Logged |
