Hiya! I have to write a paper on this story and wondered if anyone else had read it in school maybe?? It's just a short story with a whole bunch of symbolism and I am no good at that.

To refresh y'all's memory a guy is going into the forest despite please from his wife who is aptly named "Faith" and wears pink ribbons. It's night, and the forest is evil and he's never gone down this path before. Several people he sees on the same "evil" path and he is astonished, since they are the minister, "good people of the town".

So after stopping and saying he didn't want to go to the evil gathering, and then continuing, and stopping and continuing, I forgot to mention that he has an elder leading him the way with a long serpent thing (I know that might mean phallic symbol).

Finally he gets to the evil gathering, sees everyone he thought was good, and people he knew were evil, and is shocked! He is even more shocked to see his cute little young wife Faith getting ceremoniously communed at this alter with all this evil chanting.

So he begs her not to commit to evil and boom! he wakes up, and thinks maybe it was all a dream. But every passing day afterward he sees people in the town, the minister, his own wife, and distrusts them, for he saw them going their evil way to the evil gathering that night, or so he thinks..
he dies a bitter man.
the end.

If anyone has a viewpoint on this or remembers this story I would love to hear your 2 cents. thanks...

Well, I haven't read it, but...
(and this is where I was supposed to put a link to a fabulous cliff-notes like summary of the symbolism, but there seems to be no site out there like that...the closest I could get was some cheater-essays about the symbolism...they might be useful to read for starting ideas, but they themselves tend to blow).

Awesome Proxieme- I already handed in my paper but I likened the story to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden like someone had in one of your links...it was a rough draft and very humbling to have the teacher scribble over my mistakes

I ended up writing about how when people fear things they create this whole thing that confines them in their reality..and plus everything that young goodman brown feared became a reality, so it's like why bother fearing things lest we make it a self-fulfilling prophecy..

Thanks again Proxieme..
