I wrote a poem yesterday titled September 11, 2003. I wrote it at the time the planes were crashing into the Towers. Then I went out to breakfast by myself at my favorite local place, just as I did on September 11, 2001, where we diners watched the planes crash on TV.

here is the poem...

***

Had we had known
We all would have gone
Back to bed that morning.

Instead today we sing
And up we will bring
The pain and anguish
And we all will wish
That each passing day
Someday it will
Just go away.

It makes you think
You need a drink
And others to fear
You’re no longer here.

And for all the souls
For whom bells toll
Who no longer hear
Their children cry
Their families sigh
We all ask why
Oh why oh why
Do loved ones
Have to die?

Yet some will say
In a peculiar way
That they have a peace
That will never cease
And are finally free
Of you and me
For some can see
That all those
Dear beloved souls
Have been released
And reside at last
Not in the past
Yet sit with God
Happy and singing
While memories for us
Of pain and disgust
Are ever ringing.

Maybe there is truth
In a life eternal
Brought too early
By fire infernal
A life that transcends
And never ends.

The seers know it
And so we show it
We have no choice
And neither did they
When they went away.

Keep them in your heart
For their spirits will never part
With ours.

As much as we live today
So forever more will they
In our lifelong memory.

Perhaps its true
For me and you
To go on and keep
While we wake
While we sleep
Those who left
Two years today
In a special way
And see that they
Are really still here
They’re simply released
Of all the fear
And while it may be
Of little consolation
To much of the nation
We should agree to see
That you and me
And they
Will always be
And stay
As one.

For maybe
Just maybe
One and one
Equals eleven
Somewhere
Right here
Under the sun
And up in Heaven.

***

Love,
Carlo

The following email has been kept alive and moving since 9/11.

In memory of all those who perished this morning; the passengers and the pilots on the United Air and AA flights, the workers in the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and all the innocent bystanders. Our prayers go out to the friends and families of the deceased.

IF I KNEW

If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.

There will always be another day
to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do?"

But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.

So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,

That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear

Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.

I would like to say thank you to Carlo and Cat, for posting the poems, and to Randall, who chose to re-member 9/11 by putting Lindaland on a hiatus for the day.

Thank you.
