Runes are basically letters of an alphabet. If one uses rune stones to access esoteric planes, they are small, usually flat items made of stone or clay or wood or whatever, and each one has a "rune" or letter either ingraved or drawn on it. Alphabets such as the ones used by the Vikings are commonly described as using runes for letters. JRR Tolkien was a professor and did lots of work in ancient languages, history, mythology, and more. Brilliant man, eh? It is one thing to be able to write well, but he manages to create worlds in his words. The Hobbit is a wonderful book. Have you read "The Lord of the Rings" as well? The movies are good, but the books are magic. I highly recommend them.

Hey Fishkitten,
I have read the Hobbit and i love it. I love Gollum!! And Ive read the first Lord of the Rings and got halfway thru the second but then i just couldnt finish it. Im more into harry potter if you ask me! So Runes are just an old alphabet? I heard somewhere that you could only read them in moonlight or something..?

Ika-- Tolkien's runes are made up, but were based on actual Norse runes. I think you are asking about the 'moon letters' on Thorin's map. The idea is that moon letters can be read only under the same shape of moon as when they were written. Tolkien may have taken the idea of moon letters from some other mythology, I don't know.

If you want to write Tolkien's runes, look in the Return of the King appendix on writing. It gives the runic alphabet from The Hobbit, as well as another Elvish one.

Runes are a form of divination, like tarot cards, I ching etc. Each symbol has a different meaning and interpretation, they are thrown, chosen, or cast, as you picture a situation, or a question in your mind. Then they are read usually in a certain sequence. Giving you knowledge or insight into your problem. Hope that helped!

And they're also used for writing. I've never tried runes for divination, so I don't know how well they work, but if you're curious give it a go!

Unfor., moon letters are made up. But it would be really cool if someone knew how to write them! Maybe a kind fo secret ink that was ony visible in a very dim, moonish light....
