Curious as to what is everyone's view on this? My parents just sat and tried to drill in me that this is what I need. I have found spirituality and helping people to be fulfilling enough to stay away from whatever it was I was trying to avoid. ------------------ Namaste! IP: Logged |

Hey Fajita -- Personally i have an innate distrust of anyone telling me how to "cure" my ills. Don't know u or your situation -- but i hope you not living at home with parents, as you will probably have to honor their wishes if you do.I DO think that YOUR way of dealing with the "problems" is the "right" way, since it feels right to YOU. And i do believe there is personal healing when u help others in any way. IP: Logged |

You can't deny that there are those who have been helped by 12 step groups....but, as all things in life, one size does not fit all.I know very little about your situation, only what you've shared here. But you seem like a sweet being of light who will light her own path. No one can decide what will work for you, but you. Now that you have internet access, perhaps you could do some research. I have read of alternatives to 12 step programs, though none of them pop to mind. Best Wishes. IP: Logged |

I think it definately helps to share stories and offer support to others just like you, but sometimes pride and the fear of stigma predominates. On the other hand, not everyone needs or wants to lean on others when facing internal challenges. Some people cope just fine on their own. Just don't disappoint yours-Elf IP: Logged |

Thanks guys. Yes it's true, while living with my parents before I enter the facility I am court ordered to, I am required not only by the court but by my parents to attend these meetings. I see it helps many people. I can't help but notice however that don't some people self-prophecize their own horrible relapse though? So much negativity and power is given to a drug or a drink that people feel if they relapse, they are lost and gone forever, might as well die. I am not saying everyone in the 12 step groups feels this way, but that is certainly the message I have noted. Thank you all for answering. I appreciated your responses and opinions and would welcome any more. ------------------ Namaste! IP: Logged |

I always tried to stay 3 steps ahead of all 12 step groups! I know some people who say they will go to meetings for the rest of their lives. ------------------ Peace cannot be achieved through violence, it can only be attained through understanding. - Ralph Waldo Emerson - IP: Logged |
