Well, I hadda use my Recovery disk and lose all my info -- How insidious these parasites and viruses are. Actually, it was when i was on THIS site, that i got a popup telling me that i had all kinds of spyware installed and here i can download this program to get rid of all that junk. Well, that program sets itself up in the registry also and after finding and deleting several files, cookies, etc -- i just decided i would take the loss and start all over.

Anyway, this is a REAL problem - ha, now that I HAVE BEEN attacked myself. Now using Sygate Firewall and so far -- i like it a lot. I NEVER knew the kinda traffic your puter is exposed to.

Want to tell yall this tho -- i THINK where it all came from was that i downloaded a program to find the porn on my puter - as my ex-husband spent a lot of time there and i wanted the trash off!! The files that corrupted me were imbedded in the so called "helpful" porn program.

Lesson learned -- Sheesh!!

You must have picked up that pop-up elsewhere, and it just popped up when you came here. We have no pop-ups on this site.

Interesting to know that Randall. Can't say that i have had any OTHER popups here -- u right. Tho i do remember the popup telling me that the publisher of this site (thot it was THIS one - oh well) had found all this spyware on my puter -- wondering where it DID come from then.

Actually, my computer is running a LOT better now -- almost like i got a new one. Tho i am now uneasy about all probes into my ports - uh huh!! LOL

that sound like typical adware/spyware
This is the kind of stuff I deal with almost every day. I should tel you that even the best firewall will not stop it all. the way it gets into your system is very sneaky, the advertising companies embed the installer in the background code of web pages, and java applets and other pop ups. and once it is in, it opens the door for other spyware to get in. in a sense, the firewall think that you asked for it to be installed. And never download a program to clean it from a popup, chances are it will get rid of a few, but install it's own instead. I would recommend either ADAWARE, or SPYBOT.
ADAWARE can be found here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ There is a free version, and it get a lot of the spyware out.

SPYBOT can be found here: http://www.safer-networking.org/
It is also free, though they will accept donations, and if you keep it updated it will clean out 99% of all the spyware and adware out there.

I thought this would be helpful for anyone whose system has become slow or has started getting popups even when they are not on a site that uses popups. At least 85% of the people who I talk to at work who complain about system peformance and popups have no trouble after running once they run one of these two free programs.

grayheart I have both installed. As they update reference files at a different pace, I find that one will get what the other doesn`t. I also use the free version of pop up stopper by panic ware. Gotta get it Niki!

LostLeo put me on to these products & I`m eternally grateful. Thanks LL, where ever you are .

If you want to know a funny hacker story....
When I first had my pc I was in love, went to lots of websites in my surfing and spent much time on it. Then one day before I knew about Virusscan and Zone Alarm, I was hacked. The person in question sent a porn link from my email address to over 400 people ! AOL cancelled my subscription and gave me a telling off as they didn't believe I had been hacked. I had tonnes of hate mail, for ages....luckily I am now living with my pc expert boyfriend

Nikispeedy that is the message spyware gives you no matter where you are...notice it didn't name this site, it just said, warning, this site, blah blah blah, you can't beleive anything you read on a pop up!
I say it out of care, once someone IM'd me when I was 14 and asked me for my password to AOL so that I could get 12 free hours, so I sent them the password, and of course, ended up getting kicked off for what they did while online.
