Just wanted to share with ya'll the letter I finally ended up composing and sending, after all your words of wisdom....
*****************
Dear Tony-
Hey friend! My cell phone isn't working, so I couldn't send you a text message Maybe that's for the best cause I'd really rather write you a letter this time. Some things are too importantr to not be put down on paper.
You know I've never been thrilled about you choosing a future in the military. Still, I've come to the point where I realize no matter what direction your life takes, "best" friend, I want you to know I'll always be there to support you. Whatever makes you happy, well, I respect that. I value your friendship too much to let your decision create a distance between us.
So, I wish you luck talking with the recruiter, and please let me know how things go with your meeting.
I miss you tons and I'm really looking forward to seeing you when we visit this summer.
your "best" friend,
Katy

A very nice letter, but why is "best" in quotes? Doing so implies that you are not, in fact, best friends.

Hmm...I never thought of it like that, trillian. Ya see, it goes back to around three years ago, when he wrote me a note, and when he signed it, you can tell he started writing, "your boyfriend", but stopped after the "r", scratched it out, and wrote, in quotes, "good" friend. So ever since, I've signed our letters, "your 'good' friend"...Now since he asked me last visit if I would consider him a best friend, I just changed the word in quotes. I guess it shows my insecurity with the whole level of closeness, as I really don't know how many other people he considers "best" friends, and I'd like to think it makes our relationship special, but...? He's my only other best friend aside from his older sis, and I sorta hoped that our progression from "good" friends to "best" friends maybe hinted that the relationship might turn romantic in both our eyes sometime soon...

I think that you did the right thing!

The "best" friend thing is what my husband and I used to do in letters before we got married.

I wish you all the best in this situation.

Thanks again, Stace! Yes, it seems so playful, and also nice to know we (Tony and I) are not alone in our quirky little greetings...

Today was his "meeting", and also probably the day he received this letter. I'm hoping that perhaps I'll be hearing back from him soon, in some form or another. Oh, I wish my cell phone was working...::bummer::
