A couple of weeks ago I bought the first bottle of perfume I have ever bought. EVER. An impulse buy. It smelled great in the shop - but, after a few hours - forgettable. I felt as if it completely obliterated my own natural scent, though it was only eau de toilette. I'm comfortable with most of the perfume in make-up, that generally seems to be at an acceptable level, and blends well with one's own body, but this - I felt so embarrassed to wear it that I gave it to charity!!!
As far as male products go, I actually prefer men's natural scent (fresh male sweat...really gets me going...slap wrist, ariestiger!), or the scent of my husband's deodorant, which I find absolutely magnetic, and which ensures that I stick to him like a limpet. But I don't like aftershave.
I have this theory that men who like using aftershave are probably attracted to women who like using strong scents, and buying them for them. I've noticed this particularly with older people. However, several men of my generation who I've asked about this have explicitly stated that they absolutely hate artificial scents, and prefer a woman's "natural" scent.

So come on, guys! I'd be interested to know what you really think of perfume!

I think it is sexy and evocative.
I like perfumes that makes a girl tempting yet forbidden-pefumes that are dark but not heavy.

The biggest turn on for me is a perfume that smells clean at first and has musk as its base substance. It drives me insane!

This reminded me of an incident from my past.

I had bought a new perfume, and tried it out on my weekly date night with my (now EX) husband.

I got in the car, and after a moment, he said, "Do you smell something?" wrinkling his nose.

I smiled smugly. I just KNEW it was the fabulous new perfume. "Well . . . what do you smell?"

"Bug spray! Like RAID, or something. Yuck!"

"Is this it?" I said stiffly, holding out my wrist for a sniff.

He sniffed, then recoiled. "Ack! Yes! What did you do?!"

I went back in, took a shower . . . then got in my jammies and turned on the tv. He never did figure out why I was miffed. So much for the Virgo!

My hubby hates really strong floral smells. He says he always gets heady around those. Actually, I hate them too. I like really understated scents, mainly musky, woody, smoky ones. I got one as a gift last year which I love. It has something in it that drives my hubby crazy. I don't put it on too often.....Well, some of us have to work you know!!!

OMG Kells!! I had the EXACT same experience with my ex-boyf, and it too was in his car!!
We decided to go into town and rent a vid to watch and I too had a (so I thought..!) sexy new scent and he was like "Whats that smell, smells like bug spray, or nail varnish or something...." !!!!!!
I was soo embaressed, I pretended I'd forgotton my jacket and raced inside to scrub the smell of my wrists!!!
I think he prefered soft, musky scents that u can only smell close up, and guess what!! He was an earth sign aswell; a Capricorn!! Maybe Leo's prefer stronger scents???

hi ariestiger,
when i wear any scent at all it's usually one of those roll-on incense oils - i have one from Auric Blends called Egyptian Goddess that i really like

for "special" occassions i use Noa - a french perfume that's pretty mellow - i only use a bit. here's the gloopy description i found on-line:

quote:
Introducing Noa by Cacharel, a brilliant fragrance that speaks to the harmony of the mind, body and soul. Its top notes smell of fresh green and coriander followed by an aura of fine white peony blooming in the heart. The bottom notes are radiant with the essence of blooming white musk, a whisper of incense and the bittersweet warmth of coffee for the finishing touch.

yah, whatever. i guess it does have a floral base, but it's not overpowering - and it doesn't make me sneeze!

i'm a capricorn, so i also have a soft spot for Chanel No. 5 - which i only use VERY rarely, because it's... perfumey.

my husband's never worn cologne in his life. i love the smell of his neck - it smells like fresh air.

Hmmm...I will check Noa out - it sounds interesting...and maybe something I would like...
I also like incense and patchouli - I love that "wet earth" smell. Again, my husband doesn't like those - calls the incense "ganja"! (He's an Aqua, with Capricorn Venus).

I LOVE Noa!
My latest favorite is Light Blue by Dolce Gabbana.

Sorry, ariestiger, if I had the name for that fragrance that I described, I would have typed it. Maybe one day I'll make my own perfume that smells just like that.

And Gia, HOW DID YOU KNOW? What you said is exactly what I like.

Speaking of perfumes, have you guys read "The Perfume" by Patrick Susskind? I strongly recommend the book to all that are obsessed with smells(like me )

I am very sensitive to scents, and my other senses are sometimes VERY affected. . Whether it's nice natural warm clean skin, Nag Champa incense, the smell of my husband's assorted colognes, each one evoking a different memory. mmmmmmmm. I am attracted/repulsed by scents. I love spicy, cinnamin-y smells, vanilla, musk, incense, some floral notes...ylang ylang mixed with tangerine, peony, patchouli, neroli, coconut, amber, sandalwood.
My current perfume, for the last four years or so, is Givenchy Indecence. It is a companion perfume to organza, which I am not crazy about, but 'Indecence' is awesome! It works with my chemistry. I love men's strong cologne too. But on the right man. Once you find a signature scent, that's it! You just know.
I always mix it up, depending on mood. There is a subtle body spray by Coty` Healing Garden, I actually like the entire line.. subtle and pleasant.
I love scents. On the other hand, if something smells icky, it can totally turn my stomach. Ick!

I gotta secret weapon.. it's amazing.

It's Barefoot Doctor's Chi/Qi Private Mix extra sensual. It's a pheromone spray magically concocted by the Barefoot Doc himself. The warning and disclaimer reads:

"Private mix application may be highly habit-forming. Neither Barefoot Doctor nor anyone involved in it's preparation, distribution or sale can be held responsible for issues resulting from suddenly increased popularity of your person." !!

I also got the 'Orgasmic Body Spray':

"Seriously now, smelling too damn sexy may cause orgasmic responses from anyone in close proximity which could alter your routine. Always spray with care!"

Damn good products, check out the site
http://www.barefootdoctorglobal.com/

It's a perfume in it's own right, but I use it as a base with other scents like Hypnotic Poison, or Sicily..

Have fun!!

I love perfume. It makes me feel EXTRA beautiful. I love to smell myself when I have it on. I will sniff my own wrists often.

I wear Casmir by Chopard. Smells so heavenly. MMMM ... I'm smelling myself now

Yin - i LOVE that book. i give it as a gift to all the readers i know. it's a truly astounding piece of writing - thanks for the reminder! and definitely pick it up, for those who haven't read it. it's about this very strange person who has the keenest nose around, but he himself has no scent... the story is about his quest to find the perfect aroma. fabulous!!!

I wear Cerutti 1881, and have worn it for the past 6 years. I used to love Japenese Musk from the Body Shop, but that some time ago became too overpowering for me. I agree with Pixie, once you find your scent you generally stick with it...even us flighty Geminis! lol

I love perfume, and miss it terribly. But I can no longer wear it, as it really affects my sinuses.

I loved wearing Halston and Oscar de la Renta...there are still bottles sitting on my dresser, hoping I will use them again. Victoria's Secret made a fragrance that I loved, too, though I can't recall the name...

And now, there is an ingredient that is included with a lot of newer fragrances that just smells so stinky to me. I don't know what it is, but it's pervasive and gross. There's even a hint of it in the 'Sublime' fake tan from L'Oreal.

I like the sound of that pheromone spray! I like the sound of that book, too...
I am naturally very short-sighted (don't laugh!!! - I wear contact lenses most of the time)so my other senses seem to make up for it...
Like hearing, touch, and, of course, smell. I have a very sensitive nose...(Virgo rising?)

Ariestiger.....
How interesting... I am super short sighted too.. I wear contacts.. occasionally I'll get out the thick rimmed glasses, but I hate depending on them... (one day I'll go for the Lasik surgery, but for now, the 'extra' money we have is devoted to other, more important things...ie; kids stuff) Anyway, My other senses are quite developed.. I wonder if that's why???? You have raised a very interesting point to ponder. Thanks. I mentioned in my first post here that smells really affect me.. good or bad. Hmmmmmmm.

Well, you know what they say? "Spray together, stay together".
It was an orange-faced woman in a white coat that told me that little phrase! Although, naffly enough, at the time I was buying Hugo Boss for my boyfriend and was wearing Hugo for Women.
I think subtlety is the key with scents. I agree that I really like a man's natural body smell (as long as its not 3 days old!), although a little Linx deoderant is also nice.
But what is it about 16 year old boys that smother themselves in some really strong smelling nasty aftershave? It's as if it's the only beauty product accessible to them (that won't class them as 'gay') so they really go for it! No wonder at 15 we went for 21 year olds!

Hi Matilda! haha orange faced lady in white coat! I used to work in beauty and saw plenty!!

Yep, it's the younguns that love Lynx and spray it on every 5mins! See you're from UK too, Oxford? Cool!

Ariestiger and pixie, I'm on that shortsighted thang too in my right eye Ariestiger, did you try the pheremone spray? It smells unisex - is meant to be though! I recommend it, you only need a teeny bit too.. the music on the website's cool too.

pix, have you tried the bath scent by 'Philosphy' called Cinnamon Buns?? Ohh myyy dddaaaayyyyyss, soooo lush have to be supervised when using since there's danger of eating it (hehe.. not always a bad thing) sometimes just walk into the department stores to getta whiff..

My Leo likes light fruit like scents (CK One) I don't.

I like heavy dreamy scents like
Aqua di Parma-Cypress. (Smells like... Cypress or Ylang-Ylang). For me there is no such thing as too much.

He prefers that which is subtle...but than there is me...subtle...HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I second the recommendation of the book Perfume by Suskind. I picked up on a fluke a few years ago...one of the best modern fiction stories I have read. (the setting isn't modern, I just mean that it is not a classic...yet...)

Love,
Amber
(The Libra that you can smell long after I have left the room...)
