Hey all I just moved in with my stepdad the beginning of June. My mom just moved in here a couple of days ago and my emotional torment is beginning to resurface. I have had all kinds of problems growing up and never found they were the kind of parents you just talk to about stuff. I just visited my best friends who live 2 hrs away (Sacramento) and they keep sayin I should move there. Now I am not the kind of person that can be swayed easily, but I can't help but think they are right. I don't like living in Nevada at all (especially with my parents).

I have about $200 to my name, and have talked very seriously with them about moving into my own place (which I understand fully is going to take a tremendous amount of responsibilty on my part) However, I am 17 until Sept. so I would have to file papers or something.

Do ya'll think I'm foolish for wanting to leave, or is it really a good idea? I want to go to school there and really like the area, but I am scared cos I have never done the whole living on my own thing. Have any of you guys been thru this before?

In my case, living on my own was definatly EASIER than living with my parents! If you miss them, you can always call.

Hi Dorkus,

I moved out when I was 18 (my b-day being in Decemeber meant a late start in kindergarten so I graduated HS at 18). As soon as I could I got a job and moved out- literally it was 3 months after graduation. I never looked back at living with my family again and I am now 34. I almost moved in with my mom in Idaho to start a business- this coming Sept. But she showed her old self again and brought up a well of memories that I couldn't take.

Sooooo, my advice to you is to take the chance - BUT be well prepared. California is expensive and even though Sac is not as bad as San Fran or Orange Co, it is very expensive compared to Nevada. Please make sure you are aware of the living arrangements (if you get your own place make sure you know the rent, the area and the job potential). If you have a large enough student loan or scholarship you may be able to live on campus or use the extra for an Apt.

If you plan to live with your friends, make sure you at least have a way of getting a job. Friends are great, but patience only last so long before they realize someone is not pitching in the dough.

There are a couple of good websites for looking at Apts..
www.apartments.com www.apartmentguide.com

and you can also look at the crime stats in a particular area to ensure you are not renting in an unsafe neighborhood. In your case you already have some friends there, so it should be a lot easier.

Take care and don't hesitate to shout out to us.

I'm from Orange Co, Calif originally and had my own apartment 2 times there, moved up to Portland, OR and Vancouver, Wa - then to Annapolis, MD- got divorced- got my own place LOL..now I am getting ready to move back out west, this time to Arizona. So, I am kind of an old hand now at the relocation thing.

Good luck and I wish you the best!!!!

So sorry to disagree Pid

D.
Its normal to feel this way at your age but consider this first

If its uncomfortable at home learn to distance yourself.
Right now you should be learning everything it takes to make it in the adult world.
Finish school its only one more year and you need that education. If you move away with friends you won't finish.
Start preparing and take advantage of the free rent while you can, its no picnic out there
Good Luck Sweetie
Next year take Piddys advice

I have finished high school linda I've been trying to get registered for classes at the college here, but they've been giving me a hard time, and plus attending school here in Reno was my last choice. I have a great deal of confidence I can make it in Sac working 40 hr wks. I'm gonna hold off school until the spring, too. I'm not gonna have any roomates seeing as to how it is a small place and the rent is fair. I believe I qualify for social security and what not, so I'm gonna check that out. I'm not moving just for the hell of it, but because I have such a rocky relationship with my parents.
