I could really use some book suggestions for a 12 year-old in a situation he can't control. He loves to laugh, but hasn't done much of that lately. A self-esteem booster would be good too. Are there any books out there that would make a child laugh as well as give him some spiritual up lifting?
He's not the Lord of The Rings" or Harry Potter" type. More like creative thinking, humor type, if there is such a book.
Thanks!

Gee this is hard but I loved the Phantom Toll Both by Norton Juster...

It is about a boy named Milo who I think is 12 and he is bored. One day he comes home and finds a package in his room. It has a car and a toll booth... he drives through and the rest is the story...

It is a wonderful book. You can find out more info about it on Amazon

Best Wishes
(It is always hard to find books for other people)

Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy is always hilarious, but not really sure if it's spiritually uplifting. Life of Pi has some funny parts, and it's extremely interesting, plus, pretty spiritual.

I'm not sure if these are too Harry Potter-ish, but _A Wrinkle in Time_ and its lot (_A Wind in the Door_ _A Swiftly Tilting Planet_, _Many Waters_) are a good read.

edit:

Ha! And when I went searching Amazon.com for the above, it recommended _The Phantom Tollbooth_ if on the "Page I Made" - it's another great, odd, worthwhile read.

I would like to suggest The Prophet by Kalihl Gibran.

It's not so deep that a 12 year old couldn't get into it, my ten year old has read a few chapters.

The really nice part about the book is that it teaches great Truths about spiritual awareness, as opposed to just going through the motions and saying the words.

Who knows Philbird ...perhaps even YOU might take the time to read it!

Great read. I have several copies if you would like one.

Love,

daf

What about the "Captain Underpants" series? Or Mad Magazine.
Silly, Humerous, lose-yourself-in-silliness goofy books.

Good Morning every body,
I was busy yesterday and didn't get to this post until this morning. I've printed out your suggestions. I can see my son's eyes lighting up when I give him a book called "Captian Underpants" Ha Ha Ha! That's right up his alley!
Thanks Again!
Sheaa, he's doing so so. I'm trying to arrange a flight back East to visit him for a week.

I also loved the prophet.

Captain Underpants.....
You can tell I have a silly little nine year old boy, huh?
It's a collection of activity books.. like with stories with blanks, and you fill in your own verb/noun/adjective, etc... my son laughs out loud when he does them.
it's creative too!
( I love things like that!)
I know, it's not very spiritual.. but we are talking a twelve year old, here.......
