This is just a rant so I'm sorry for taking up your time if you're reading this.

/rant
Is it just me or is anyone else annoyed by trucks and SUVs with blinding headlights? I drive a camry. Those truck and SUV lights are pretty much eye level with me and very, very disturbing when I'm driving. Especially when I'm driving down a one lane, winding, hilly road at 6:30 am before the sun comes up on a blustery, rainy day to drop my hubby off at work. Forgive me for obeying the law and not driving over the speed limit but do they really have to get on my tail as though that's going to make me speed up? I'm blinded by your lights. I'm slowing down until you pass me.
/rant off

Ok, sorry. I wonder if there's anything that can be done about it. Like manufacturing some kind of lights that point down or are lower yet still illuminate enough for the drivers of those trucks and SUVs. It would be nice.

Yea I have this problem too and BTW I drive a Camry. There were tons of them out on the highway when I drove home from college this week. It was dark out and pouring rain, and the beaming headlights just made it worse!
I also hate the way these people can be parking hogs...sorry to discrimate against SUV/ Truck owners. May I suggest that you switch to a Mini Van, because they are not as intimidating lol

I dislike SUV's for SO MANY REASONS. Yes, the headlight thing is one of them. I can really go off on SUV rants... in fact I did just the other day on my board.

copied and pasted:
I don't mind if people that actually NEED an SUV have one. LIke if they really do go camping several times a year or if they live down a dirt road or they need it for work (actually USE it for work ... not just drive to work in it).

But there is NO REASON for there to be so many SUV's in Los Angeles. They are a status symbol and it ****** me off that people are putting ME and my family in more danger so they can be "IN".

I'm not saying that if a friend of mine has a stupid SUV for no reason that I'm not going to STOP being friends with them or something. I won't agree with their choice.. and I'm sure they'll know about it

I hate SUV's on the road. It's really difficult if not impossible to see over them and around them. This is especially troublesome at intersections - when I have to turn and an SUV is blocking my view so I can't see at ALL if cars are coming. VERY dangerous.

I hate SUV's in parking lots. There are so many SUV's here in LA that I am not joking.. I can park my Saturn and be surrounded by them. HUGE hulking SUV's in parking spaces marked as 'compact'. HELLO ******* ! If you have an SUV you can NOT park in a spot for compact cars. What planet are you from? It makes it really hard to navigate at all in parking lots.

I hate SUV drivers that think they can intimidate me because they have a bigger vehicle. Assholes. (this goes for regular BMW drivers... ****tards).

I hate the SUV's by the school in the morning that take up so much parking space on the street that I have to go all the way around the block to find a spot for my little car. There will be 3 SUV's (or minivans) parked where 5 regular cars could fit instead.

I hate that SUV's take up so much gas (this goes for other large vehicles and V8 engine cars). One woman on another board defended this to me by saying "Well my SUV gets 20 miles to the gallon!". HI.. um.. that's not something to BRAG about. That's BAD. Don't you even dare complain about gas prices.. mmmmkay?

I hate that people with one or two kids defend their choice to get an SUV because of the children. Sorry.. doesn't cut it. Just admit you want one as a status symbol and I'll have a little more respect for ya than blaming it on the kids. I have a child. Strangely.. he actually fits into my little car. I understand if you have 3 kids or more.. or 2 kids and a large family and dogs you cart around a lot or something.

**I say***

**let's revolt!**

I can totally sympathasize with EVERYTHING you both are saying. I too drive a little compact car, a Dodge Colt, and I live in a rural area as well. I'm sick to death of these stupid red-neck big honken pick up truck and SUV driving impatient tail-gaters riding my ass because I'm not flooring it enough for them, and completely blinding me with their head-lights in my rear view mirror, which makes me SLOW DOWN EVEN MORE, because I can't bloody well drive faster when I'm BLINDED, now can I?!

Totally agree also about it being difficult to make left turns because 9 times out of 10, there's a fat-ass SUV in the opposite turning lane, blocking my view of oncoming traffic...so, all I can do is wait for the light to turn yellow, and go when the oncoming traffic has stopped for the light. (oh, those red-neck pick-up drivers REALLY hate that if they're waiting to turn behind you...hell, they've already start bitchen and honking impatiently by that point, cuz THEY can see when it's clear to go...you know how you can tell when the person in the vehicle behind you is bitching about you holding them up, their head starts to bobble about and they wave their arms around in exasperation....losers.)

Ah...that was a very pent up rant for me...

Thanks, Eleanor. I feel much better now.

AHHH YEESS!!! Hahaha I love this thread! I can sympathize with EVERYTHING said! And I don't think my car is really that small...an Olds Alero...and SUV drivers STILL act like I drive a Mini!

I just wanted to rant too I guess haha...where I live it seriously has to be a status symbol to have the huge Ford trucks. Most of the people that own them NEVER use them for ANYTHING. And I go to the local gas station that has the MOST space to pull into, and I STILL get extremely mean glares from SUV and truck drivers who can't fit their HUGE VEHICLE at the gas pump near mine, even though I'm pulled right up to mine! OH WELL. DRIVE SOMETHING SMALLER.

I also can't understand why SUV and truck drivers think they are driving monster trucks. Hahah, car drivers have nearly tailgated me so bad, with the exception of this woman that lives near me who drives a Mustang. And I drive over the speed limit quite frequently, so I know they are just being rude.

And parking! OH MY GOD. I live in areas where streets are rather narrow, and parking lots are rather small. First off, why do COPS need SUVs?! WHY!! One town here, that's almost all that cops drive. They at least half the biggest parking lot in town. Then during the work week, the other half is almost full of huge vans, trucks, and SUVs. The spots are cramped, and parking my car is so scary, I do'nt want to hit one of these overly expensive gas-hopping pieces of scrap metal! I paid $8k for my car which I think was more than reasonable, for 25 mpg and then I have to hear these SUV drivers who paid more than their house mortgages whine about gas prices. And my car is brand new looking...is this why people who drive these things insist on parking right near me? Do they honestly think I won't hit their vehicle?! IT'S TOO BIG!! I can hardly maneuver out of spots anymore without having to pull out straight so far that I nearly have to hit the bumper of the car ON THE OTHER SIDE. This infuriates me at places like the grocery store or the mall, where I park very far away from the store where there's no cars and I can come out to a Ford F350 on one side of me and an SUV on the other side with no cars around. SENSE? NONE!

Oh yeah what's with the blue lights that so many people have on their vehicles now? Are they even functional, because they blind the hell out of me!

Hehe... yeah... I hate big ol' SUVs too.

I especially hate that so many of their owners don't know how to park. I have been known to leave notes on the windshield of SUV owners who have taken up more than one spot suggesting they either take some parking lessons or get a smaller vehicle they are capable of managing.

Also, since I drive a small car, (if there is room) I will squeeze myself into the extra spot they are trying to take up.

hahahaaaa pixie!!! You are so naughty!!

ohh I hate it when they take up two spots, too! SO RUDE SO RUDE! I've often wished I had paper and pen to write them notes. I think I should just start carrying pre-printed up cards since it's nearly a daily occurance. The hard part would be for me to stay civil and not say something like "HEY ******* ! etc.etc"

BRM~Haha printed up cards would be good! I actually think one of these big stinky SUV's Keyed my car for parking too close, but it wasn't my fault their big @ss took up half the other space!

Ok this might be hypocritical-I actually had the "privilege" to drive my Gramma's big blazer once and your so high off the ground you actually feel as though you could just squash the cars in front of you! You have to be very cautious, because the power tripp could be dangerous if the wrong person is behind the wheel... for example a Scorpio, just kidding!

Yeah, I hear ya'll. I drive a camry too.

Eleanor, about the rear lights - on the rearview mirror, you can flick the inside mirror to dim the lights a bit. This is useful for preventing the blindness you speak of. I just didn't know if you're aware of this.

I think one reason people get SUVs is because they're so annoying when you're not in one, so thay buy 'em and annoy everyone else not in one. Also, they do feel more powerful, even if they're loads slower and way more expensive.

Dean.

SUVs irritate the h*** out of me, too. If your side mirrors are powered, just adjust them slightly so the lights aren't hitting you in the eyes, same for the center rear-view mirrow - you actually can adjust it to shine their headlight reflection back into their eyes!

My ex-husband had a really funny idea once - to rig up an airplane landing light (if you've ever seen one, they're REALLY bright) facing backward on his car and to turn it on whenever someone got too close or had blindingly bright headlights, he would switch it on...

OMG! this post just made my day!
if anyone hates SUV's it's me.
i was hovering between howing laughter and nodding my head in approval while reading.

what i never got was the stupid ads they always have. there was one awhile back that had a showed a man and said something about "the car for the infinantely fertile man". then they showed like 6 baby cribes. sick, just sick!
and then there the one that shows two parents, 4 kids and a dog in one. because it has room for 7! oh, how wonderful! and since nobody has 5 kids they stuck a dog in there.
i mean really, how many people have 4 or 5 kids? NOBODY! at least not the number of people who own an SUV. maybe that's why when you see one there is only ever one person in it - the driver.

seriously, how often have you seen more than one person in an SUV?

ahh...... i hate them.

it's just that the ads are so stupid and show that obviously people don't NEED one. wasn't there some commercial? it's not what you need, just more than you expect? or some drivel.....

and whoever said about cops in SUV's.....hahah... that is darn funny. i just saw one today.

I knew someone that actually rigged up headlights on the back of their car with a manual switch so they could turn it on when tailgated.....

I hate the commercial for the massive truch or SUV or whatever that says "It's not more than you need.. just more than you're used to."

How the heck would they know what I need?! 90% of the population DON'T need a massive monster vehicle!!

That line just makes the really stupid people go "Hmmmmm maybe I do need a truck that can haul a load of cement for no gosh darned reason!"

or

"What if one day while I'm at work for the lawfirm and I have to suddenly haul some lumber during my half hour lunch break?!"

I'm still amused that one of the better car companies out there, can't even make an SUV that won't burst into flames after an oil change.

Wow, I didn't think this thread would get any attention. I'm glad I'm not alone in my frustrations though. My hubby actually does change the mirror when he's in the car so that it reflects back at the driver. I don't like it so I wouldn't do it, but he gets just as bothered by it as I do. There are plenty of deer, raccoons and oppossums, etc. in the roads out here (even a hog once!) so I get nervous when those lights are blinding me. Many times I've had to brake or swerve to not hit an animal. Imagine if I hadn't seen it because some guy had to ride my tail with his too high headlights on, flashing his high-beams with those supremely annoying fog lights on? GRRRR. I actually slowed down to about 25 today just to get some guy off my tail. It was a 45 zone and this guy passed me and zoomed off ... must've hit 70 at least. Some folks are just nuts.

S.U.V= Stupid, ugly vehicle

BRM,
I used to have a daily rant about how much it ****** me off how many ppl in LA drive these massive gas guzzling steel dragons. What the heck is the point? Unless they are trekking up the Sierra Nevadas every weekend with 3 kids, 2 dogs and lots of tents and camping/hiking equiptment, they ABSOLUTELY DO NOT NEED CARS THAT BIG. It barely rains in LA, there is no snow, and nobody, but nobody goes 'off roading' in the streets of Sierra Madre or Inglewood. Status symbol? Totally, I would have the same thing to say to Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston: ''you ppl are supposed to be cool, why in God/desses green earth do you both have an SUV? That you drive to the same place at the same time seperately in?'' There was me, in my little 1991 Nissan Stanza, trying to get around a car park with those hideous monstrosities in front of, behind, and all around me. And how many ppl were in them? ONE. ONE PERSON WTF??

lioneye68,

I used to drive a Dodge Colt!! Thought I was the only person who knew what that car was! Ahhh, memories....

Ghani takes up her picket sign and heads for the Escalade dealership...

I have also found that adjusting my rearview mirror to reflect back at the monster truck or SUV tailgating me is pretty effective in getting them off my back.
I really like the idea of having a big light in the back of my car to turn on when need be...I'm gonna have to look into that.. heeeheh

Yes Harpyr, i have taken the challenge from that site. love love love it.

I am convinced that manufacturers of headlights wont be happy until turning on the high beams causes nearby trees to burst into flames.

I too belong to the "i hate SUVs" club.

Some car companies got together and took a survey of SUV owners, and their characteristics. I am trying to find the original story on the Net, not having much luck. Apparently, people who own SUVs are more vain and selfish than people who buy other vehicles...

yes, i will try to find it.

Cops drive SUVs because there is a HUGE tax break to federal employee, law enforcement, and business owners is they buy one.

So, everytime gas prices go up, I smile.

Karma is a ***** .

Homer: Ooh, there's a good one!
Marge: That spot says compact only!
Homer: Marge, that's just the suggested car size...easy...easy... how am I doing on the right?
Lisa: Um, we're getting a lot of sparks over here, dad!
Homer: Uh huh, easy...easy...mmm perfect, alright everybody out the window!
