The first was at an employment agency for the waitress/barista gig. The woman I met with said she was hesitant to place me in that position because I am better suited for office work. The interview went well. She seemed to really like me and be impressed with my abilities (given my lack of experience). I took a typing speed test, and various other tests to prove my abilities (Excell, 10 key, that kind of thing). She said she plans on placing me in a Reception/Clerical/Admin. Assistant job as soon as one comes up. Could be a week... could be a month... could be tomorrow. *sigh*

She did tell me that I should tone down my spunky personality a bit in interviews. She said it is a definite asset, but some employers might be intimidated by my strong personality. Heh... I suppose that's not good.

The other was a total friggin' waste of my time. Some pyramid scheme dealing with air filtration systems. If you sell this many (door to door) you become this level... if you bring people in beneath you you get $1000 per person, and $100 for each person they bring in. Bah... I'm no sales person... and I'm certainly not interested in any pyramid schemes.

It was funny... when I commented on how it seemed like a pyramid scheme, the interviewer fell all over himself trying to explain why it's not a pyramid scheme. So, I asked... "I don't have to bring people in under me to make this profitable?" To which he answered, "No. You don't have to. But..." and he went on to tell me about the $1000 for each person you bring in beneath you and $100 for each of their recruits.

Another thing I thought was really funny was...

While I was waiting for him to come fetch me for my interview, I was reading all of the plaques on the wall. One was from The Better Business Bureau. The bottom said "Thru Jan. 2004". Hm... interesting. Well... in his presentation, he bragged that their company was on the honor roll with the BBB in Oregon and Washington. I should have gotten up and left right then, but I didn't want to be rude.

I wanted to post this yesterday, but what you had to say about the woman telling you to tone down the spunkiness, really made me mad! You too gifted to "settle." Unless you can be content doing public service. Can you write? Do something creative? I know there are opportunity's to be creative with everyday jobs, so I'm not dissing them. But to tell you you to not be yourself...irks me!
(but then again, I have issues with authority figures.)

I love that you said that, Philbird, I was thinking the same thing.
Besides, if it were a Customer service job, whether the 'authority figures' appreciate it or not, you know the people you are dealing with.. ie; public... would appreciate you completely.
Not good advice to give you.. she was wrong to even go there. Not constructive at all.
Be you.

You're right, Philly.

I think her point was more to appear more conservative in the interview process.

After the interview, I called up one of my good Leo gal pals (who is conservative) and asked her how I could appear more conservative. She offered to loan me a suit for interviews, then laughed at the idea if ME appearing conservative . She doesn't want me to make my personality seem more conservative either. We talked for a long time about it, and I don't really know if it is something I can pull off. I don't know how to be anything but myself. Short of taking out my tongue ring and putting on a suit, I don't know how to be conservative.

My husband suggested that I practice a serious face. He said I should make three serious faces, and ask three serious questions. The rest of the time, be my spunky, laughin', grinnin' self. He thinks my personality is my biggest asset (since my resume is pretty empty).
