(author of HHG Douglas Adams)

Adams claimed numerous times that the title came from an incident while he was hitch-hiking around Europe as a young man with a copy of the Hitch-hiker's Guide to Europe book (being too poor to afford the rival book Europe on Five Dollars a Day), and while lying drunk in a field in Innsbruck with a copy of the book and looking up at the stars, thought it would be a good idea for someone to write a hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy as well. However, he also claimed later in life that he had told this story so many times that he had forgotten his actual memory of the incident, and only remembered himself telling various people the story.

I just loved that man. I wish I had his wit.

Saffron, Pixie Can you believe I haven't seen it yet? I'm finally going on Sunday, can't wait!

I read all those books in college, and a few years ago a dear friend, knowing my love for them, gifted me with a leather-bound edition containing all the books, with the gold leaf pages (that's what you call it, right? gold leaf?). There's something deliciously ironic and fitting about The Guide being packaged in leather and gold...

Trillian, were you really in this movie, or is this some inside joke I'm missing?

In any case, I haven't checked it out yet, but I intend to!

Future Uncertain...nah, I'm not really in a movie (though how fun would that be if I were?! Maybe someday, I'll let you know...).

There's a character in _Hitchhiker's Guide_ named Trisha McMillan, but when she takes off in a spaceship to see the Universe with Zaphod Beeblebrox, she changes her name to Trillian. It's more spacey, you see.

And that's the origin of my nick here at LL.

btw, I like sue g's suggest of becoming "future_certain."

Did she suggest that? I haven't seen it yet. I would love to change my name to that, but I don't know how without losing everything. Is there a way? I've just had a feeling that typing in "future_uncertain" everyday might be giving me bad vibes. (Not to sound like a nutcase...)

Well, let me know when you're a movie star, dahling!

hey Trillian...what did you think of your movie?

was true in spirit to your beloved books?

also, do you carry a towel with you wherever you go...i mean in your car, or whatever transportation you engage...

i ask because i remember an interesting fellow who always had a towel in his trunk, along with other necessities, such as a folding lawn chair...et al...and said he took the hitchhiker's guide very seriously...

anyway, i'm anticipating reading this series, as i haven't had a chance to do so yet...so i'm wondering about your take on the movie, from the perspective of one who's a loyal of fan of the literature.

love to you, and blessed be,
Saffron

Good Mornng Saffron I see you're an early riser, too. I've been up since 5:45, though to be honest I have to attribute that to one of my cats, who insists I get up when he does. Most days, though, I do prefer to be up and greet the day, get things done...

Well, I thought the movie to be...ok. The actors were great in their roles, and stayed true to the essence of the book. But the film lacked the dry humor of Douglas Adams, even though I read that he worked on the screeplay before he died. There's so much detail in those books, and so much that is laugh-outloud funny (even the name Slartibartfast makes me giggle every time!), that just the first book needs a mini-series.

The BBC did a series from these books years ago, and I remember seeing some of them on PBS. I believe they're available for purchase now, but they lack the Zoom! factor of a major motion picture's special effects.

Disappointingly, I do not literally carry a towel with me (though I do usually keep wet-naps and feminine wipes in my purse!). What I always used to keep in my car was duct tape, which personally, I think could be far more handy for trekking through the Universe.
Your friend sounds fascinating...I've always enjoyed interesting people.

Saffron, you could probably get those books for next to nothing on ebay, amazon or half.com. They make for such a fun summer read. I bought an audio of the 1st book a few years ago when I was taking my nephew on a road trip, and he is now a huge fan, too.

How are you Saffron? I hope you and your child are well and happy...

usually my babe has me up and about quite early...otherwise i would be sleeping in! although i do appreciate early rising...i so love the smell and quiet of early morning.

oddly, i've had a high fever the last few days, and i've awakened all through the nights with violent chills, dripping sweats, nausea, dehydration, musco-skeletal pain...whew! i so rarely have fevers, and i know it's due to a healing crisis brought on by a way-too-intense myofascial-chiropractic adjustment. i'm a fan of chiropractic, but i never knew it was capable of that! so when i have to get up to wrap a fleece jacket around me, scrounge for ice water or take a sea salt bath, i'll distract my delirious head by logging on here for a few minutes. i only felt well enough this morning actually to post anything.

he he...i too carry wetnaps in my bag -- also moistened bathroom towlettes and paper seat covers.

i suppose once i read hitchhiker's guide i'll learn of many more necessities.

i enjoyed the movie, but almost always i enjoy the original books more. reading is simply my favorite activity. nothing else absorbs me so completely. i guess that means i really like it inside my own head!

thanks for your kind wishes...

love, Saffron

Heh heh! Sometimes I carry my towel everywhere, what strange looks I get. (There's a town 30 minutes away that has an amazing park, but the parking isn't that great so I have to walk 20 minutes from car to park holding my towel). I also brought it with me to the Hitchhiker's premiere, it was nice seeing others with their towels!
