...need a recommendation for what to use to scrub the hardwood floors. They have that 'distressed' look (I'm in an old farmhouse), which I like, but I'd like to get them a bit cleaner. Last night I used TSP, which helped...but...

Any ideas?
Many thanks!

How about taking digital pics and sending them to people who specialize in hardwood floors for advice?

Trillian, I have used Murphy's Oil Soap on hardwood floors with a lot of success. It seems to clean and "moisturize" or condition them at the same time.

Good luck!!

oooh...ahhhh....

your dwelling sounds deliciously idyllic...

my favorite reference for natural cleaning information is How the Queen Cleans Everything by Linda Cobb -- her books are NY Times bestsellers...she's awesome...

she knows the best ways to clean and at the same time preserve the integrity of your items.

for wood floors:

brew 1 quart of boiling water with 1 or 2 teabags. let it come to room temperature. wring out a soft cloth to just damp and wash floor, keeping the rag clean. do not overwet floor. this will clean the floor and cover many imperfections. buff with a soft cloth if desired.

*tea is a wonderful cleaner for wood because of the tannic acid.

repair scratches in wood floors:

to fill scratches, use a crayon or combine several to match the floor. wax crayons for wood floors are available at the hardwood store. work the crayon into the scratch, then heat the repair with a blow-dryer and buff with a rag. this will work the repair into the floor so well, you'll never know it's there.

ms. trillian ~ you have soft spot in my heart...you seem to craft your life with such care and attention -- and you have a heart as big as the world.

one of my favorite tips of hers:

soften hardworking hands and feet by rubbing with equal proportions of cooking oil* and granulated sugar.

*olive oil works best -- this is so amazing! softness like you wouldn't believe.

more about 'the queen':

Linda Cobb first shared her cleaning tips with readers in a weekly newspaper column in Michigan, where she owned a cleaning and disaster-restoration business dealing with the aftermath of fires and floods. After moving to Phoenix, she appeared weekly as a guest on Good Morning Arizona; since then she has shared her housekeeping tips on radio and television shows across the country and in her New York Times bestsellers.

Ladies! Thank you for the tips!

Philly, I did dance when I got the last bits of that carpet up! I hated it...

Saffron~what a wonderful tip, to use tea. I'm so excited about that, and will give it a go tonight. It's non-toxic and obviously can't harm the pets. Thank you! And...thank you for the lovely compliment. I'm not sure I'm worthy, but I respect you highly and the sentiment is more than mutual.

I've used olive oil and salt as a facial scrub, but the sugar sounds much sweeter. I think I'll get myself a copy of that book...
