I was wondering if one of you knew how to fret a B/F# chord. I don't know much about slash chords.

Yeah.

First off, it's probably important to note that when there's a slash, whatever comes after the slash is the bass note that should be played. So if you were in a band scenario, you (as the guitarist) wouldn't need to worry about the F# at all. You would just play the chord B. The bass player (if he/she knows what they're doing) will play the F# under your B chord (instead of what is normal, which is to root the chord with a B bass note).

Ok, as for playing that chord by yourself without a bass player here's how you do it:

Where the strings are E A D G B E (standard tuning)
You play these frets on the corresponding string: 2 2 4 4 4 2

The second fret on your low E string is the note F#, which would serve as your bass note.

If that fingering is too uncomfortable, it's not a big deal to leave that F# out, and just play a B chord as you normally would. the most comfortable fingering of B that I play is X X 4 4 4 7. Another one is actually a Bsus4, but it sounds good is 7 9 9 8 0 0.

Thanks alot AG! I'm just learning "Where did you sleep last night?" on Nirvana's Unplugged CD. Also learning to sing and play at the same time, which takes a little time. I'm all about the hollow body I bought. It seems to serve well acoustically and electrically.

Oh, and the fingering isn't a problem AG. I really like barre chords simply because with more strings used, the sound is alot richer.
Of course, then I plug in, and start ripping out 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', 'Come As You Are', Black Dog, Rock & Roll, and, well you get the point!

Hey! What's happening? I've got another question, this one on technique. I'm working through Zep's 'Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You'. I got the fingerpicking down pretty good, but encounter a problem during the chorus part. (You know, the heavy strumming part where the song drives it home!) What's the best way to strum this without a pick? Using a pick is the only way I can get an even strum. So, what I'm asking is, what's the best way to hold the strumming hand? I know it'll take some practice.

Which chord is the sluttiest chord?

I think its a D flat 9, well any 9 chord sounds kinda slutty...but flat keys sound slutter to me. Am I making ANY cents? Maybe dollars. Seriously folks, what is the square root of your mom?

Huh?

whalewasp,

I need to test for myself before giving you an answer, and I want to hear the song again (Sorry I don't instinctively know all Led Zepplin songs...I know, bad guitarist [I don't even know Stairway To Heaven. Talk about unorthodox]).

BlueRoamer,

I don't think 9 chords are slutty. I think they're kind of nice and sensual and warm. I do think you're right about the flat keys, though. I think that perhaps I'd pick minor or minor 7ths as the sluttiest...or what about a major 79 chord like at the start of Been Caught Stealing by Jane's Addiction?

AG, that's good to be unorthodox. I'm just into the Jimmy Page/Kurt Cobain acoustic sound right now. The song I'm writing about is Track 2: Led Zeppelin I. (The first one.)

Hey Whalewasp, just checked out this thread again for the first time in a while...
When I am strumming without a pick, I find the best way to do it is with the back of your fingernails....like hold your hand in a loose, almost closed position(like holding an imaginary pick)and let the back of your fingernails hit the strings...does that help? I rarely use a pick with an acoustic, and that is really the way to strum, and get out the full volume potential.

Hurrah! I made through 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You'! However, a far cry from Mr. Page's original. The hardest part is keeping the first fret locked down with my index finger. My hands and fingers are too soft, and the barre chords don't ring out like they should. Perhaps some karate to harden the hands up? Or shoving the outstretched hands straight down into burning coals like the Shaolin monks do...mmmm, no thanks!

That's part of the reason I'm not big on barre chords. You can try different guitars to see if different fret boards help you with your problem.

The way I'd deal with would probably by substituting an Fmaj7 (X33210). It may not sound exactly correct, but it sounds cool none the less (in most cases). If it's a barred Bb, I'd have to play around to see what's most comfortable and sounds the best.
